I live in an urban environment but with some green space and gardens.
Last night in the quiet early hours, while drifting off to sleep, I heard terrible screeching from outside. I rose to look from the window thinking it was a bad cat fight but saw nothing. 10 minutes later it started and stopped again and I quickly dived to the window - to see, in the streetlamps, what looked initially (from an upstairs window) like a massive cat bent over a paleish smaller cat shaped body in the middle of the road.
I grabbed the front door keys and went downstairs and out to see - nothing. Except for a youngish fox trotting up the road towards the local green square. (Whatever was in the middle of the road had gone.) Two others appeared from somewhere and trotted after him within a minute or so.
I know we have foxes around, having seen the dead body of a vixen which had been hit by a car and hearing the barking from time to time so I am thinking that a group of young foxes caught a local cat and took it away for supper. They're quite distinctive (the long legs and sharp heads) and the street is well lit even in the early hours.
It's quite upset and unnerved me. The sounds were the worst. Maybe there was another explanation - but I'd suggest you all take your cats inside of a nighttime if you didn't before.
