I can't have a cat can I?

I love cats, always have. I've owned several over the years. I live on a semi busy road, next to a very busy road - although not a dual carriage way or anything, it's supposed to be a 30mph. I'm also a childminder so lots of small people around in the day.

I'd only ever consider a rescue cat but I don't think there's any way I'd be allowed to adopt one is there?! I do think I could give a cat a good home in terms of loving care but it would be selfish to have one now wouldn't it?! Our local cat rescue place is full and they're holding an open day, I'd just love to go and take a look!!

We got our first rescue from cats protection last year when DD was 3.5 and DS not yet 2. I took them along and we chose a cat that appeared interested in them and not at all anxious at their chaotic attention.

You could have an indoor cat that had no particular desire to go out and so wouldn't make a dash for it when a child left a door open or something. Maybe a three-legged one - or a blind one, or just an old one. Go along to the rescue open day and see what they say.

So it's not a complete no-no you don't think? I might just go along to see all the cute cats, take a donation and have a chat! I have new next door neighbours with a slightly neglected looking Persian cat who is always around here and seems to love all the attention from the kids - who have surprised me by being mostly gentle. It's got me thinking.

I think you may just need to find the right cat. An older house cat for example who is happy to sleep in another part of the house when you have the children around and to come out for love and attention later on.

Why not go along to the open day but be sure to explain your situation very fully and frankly to the rescue staff. Who knows - a new cat may be out there just right and just waiting for you.

Head over and have a chat with them.

Maybe they could match you with a youngish placid moggy who doesn't like going out?

Thanks cozie -yes, I'd absolutely be honest about my situation. They do home visits anyway so I'd only be wasting everyone's time.

Yes, indoor cat or older cat.
I have indoor cats and have built an enclosed run from the cat flap into a mesh room in the garden thats 6' x 6' that has shelves, tunnels and a wobbly bridge.

No worry about roads :)

Definitely not a complete no-no! I strongly believe that there's a perfect cat for everyone, because each cat is SO individual. Give the rescue centre all your information and I'm sure they will do their best to find yours.
