Why is my cat moulting so much and how can I make it stop?!

Hoping for some words of wisdom here! My cat has never been a big moulter but since we moved house it is out of control! We moved from a flat with storage heating to a centrally heated house so at first I thought it was that. She was a house cat previously but is now allowed out. I thought it would be better once she was out and about because she'd be rubbing against stuff and shedding outside but if anything it's got worse! We are brushing her but not too often because I didn't know if that would make it worse? She is 5 years old, normal diet, drinks plenty of water, no fleas etc. Can anyone help?!

Welcome to the No Black Clothes Club. She's not a ginger cat is she ? (Looking at your name.) They can moult like there's no tomorrow.

Get a Furminator - removes unfeasible amounts of fur when you want it to be removed, rather than when the cat is rubbing round your legs...

Shave the cat and put a little wooly jumper on it instead

I just hoover regularly and accept that I will probably spend the rest of my life covered in cat hair.

I'll do you a shopping list;

Furminator.
Lint roller (adhesive type)
Miele cat and dog vacuum.

She's a white and tortoiseshell cat, absolutely gorgeous to look at but fur left everywhere in all colours of the rainbow!

I've just had a look at the furminator and I think this might be the avenue to go down. I bought a handheld vac the other week but it just seems to move it around not suck it up!

I did suggest shaving the cat but DP thinks that would be 'cruel'. Spoilsport.

Ooooh a cat vac sounds interesting! I'll have a look. Currently going through one lint roller a week, it is literally ridiculous!

She is probably shedding more because it is Spring, and it will calm down again in a few weeks. Sunlight outdoors regulates the hair cycle so you wouldn't have noticed while she was an indoors cat. She'll probably moult a bit more in the autumn too.

I would go with the Furminator, I do mine round about this time every year.

Yes to the furminator, they're the best pet grooming tool I've ever found (great for dogs as well as cats) and I think I've pretty much tried them all over the years.

I am still tempted to shave one of the cats though, she's very fluffy and evil and tries to maim me every time I try to brush her, I'm thinking a buzz cut all over and a jumper would be easier on both of us

Feed your car wet food. After 7 years of cat hair all over the house, switching from dry food to wet food changed it overnight! Her coat has nve looked healthier and no cat hair on clothes or furniture now.
