Picked up our new cat today

We picked up our new cat from the RSPCA today (I posted about it under a different name), she seems to have settled in very well. She has sat on our knees and purred and she is currently curled up asleep on chair under the table.

But she hasn't been to the toilet yet or really drank. We have showed her the litter tray and we have showed her her food and water but she has mostly just investigated and slept. She is very very friendly but a little bit nervous.

Is it ok? She has been here since about 12.

Aw how lovely! It's great she's purring and sitting on your knee - sounds like everything's going fine. What colouring is she?

They take a while to settle - odds are it's all a bit busy for her at the moment. You'll likely find that all the action will take place tonight but in the meantime, let her be by herself for a little so that she can have some private time. That might help.

Well just after I posted she woke up and came and sat next to me and is purring away very happily. DH showed her the litter tray again and she walked in and then walked out. She was a stray but I think she must have been a pet at some point, she is so so friendly, she has purred non-stop.

She's got the most beautifull eyes, they look almost a lime colour. I love black and white cats.

That looks like a cat who is happy to be home. I wouldn't worry.

I can honestly say it took my rehomers up to 9 months to fully settle down - they were fine from day 1 but it did take time for them to be 100% chillaxed all the time!

re the water. if you're concerned, take her into the bathroom and run the bath/sink tap. I find my cats a lot more willing to drink from the taps than the waterbowl. If they do drink out of a waterbowl, its the dogs not theirs. Mine might just be a bit special though

She has used her litter tray and is much more confident with her food today. She is sat cuddled up to me purring as I type, so gentle and friendly. Am in love!

Maisy has settled in nicely but she doesn't seem to play, is this because she is not a kitten any more or because she is nervous? She really wants to spend time with us and sits next to us pretty much all day but she just isn't interested in playing. We have dangly things on sticks, balls and cat nippy thingys but she just looks at them in disgust and curls up back to sleep!

She is eating very well (greedy girl) and seems very happy, purrs all the time.

Some don't when they get older (I forget how old she actually is) and it sounds as if she's more focussed on her new people at the moment. She's only been with you a week though so give it time - it may just be that she's a lap cat but equally, you may get up one morning and find she's being a madcap.

If you're all happy, that's the main thing.

We had a cat who didn't play because she hadn't been played with by humans, only litter mates.

It took quite a while to persuade her string was fun, she never really got much out of it though.

She was very content to be a lap cat who followed you everywhere and sulked if you shouted at her for going on the worktops.
