My cat has gone missing. Help!

Hi there

My lovely 2 y old cat has gone missing. She was around this morning and had her breakfast then cleaner came and she went out, as she usually does. We have been out all day for dd1's birthday and noticed when we got back about 6 that the cat hadn't come back. She is usually very punctual for her tea but I've tapped her bowl and called her but nothing.

I am so sad. I realise she's not been gone overnight even but she's such a gentle soul, very home based and always around. House feels very empty. She's just started bringing us dead mouse presents so hope she's off hunting somewhere and forgotten the time.

I will leaflet and poster tomorrow. Is there anything else I should be doing?

I have two 2yr old cats, one is lazy and never goes anywhere, the other has been out killing rabbits for the last week or so. I think in the last week she has been in the house twice, the rest of the time I do not see her. I know it is awful not knowing but hopefully yours is doing similar to mine. You do get used to them being gone for a day or two xx

Thanks topknob. We are in south London so not many rabbits but hope she is stalking a good mouse trawl somewhere.

If only she could let me know she was going to be out late >

Did your cat come back yet? My cat did this, and he came back after 3 days, no idea where he was, but after that he decided it was good to go a wee holiday now and then, hope your cat is ok and i am sure she will be back, xxxxx

Of course. If, say, she caught a mouse shortly before you came home, and stopped out to play with it and maybe eat it, she's hardly been gone any time at all. Keep your lights on downstairs and go out regularly as you've been doing.

Aww, its horrid when they go wandering Sad especially when it's out of character.

One thing to try is to empty the contents of your hoover by the front and back door of your house. It can help to orientate them home as they can roam up to a mile in any direction.

Definitely leaflets on lamposts and through doors as already said.

Also you can contact the nearest vets, local cats protection league and sometimes local papers have a lost pets section?

For peace of mind you can contact the local council. If they find any animals killed on the road they will be able to tell you. Think often they have scanners for microchips too.

For what it's worth my cat disappeared for NINE days, having never missed a meal before. I was 100% certain he was dead and then at 4am on day 10 he arrived like a rocket through the cat flap. We think shut in a garage as was very thin with a cut leg.

Yeah they do have a tendency for out of the blue to go wandering, i once had a cat i had to give away, due to baby and allergys, i made sure he had a lovely new home 20 miles away, new owners rang me up to say he got out and never came back, then 6 months later, who came wandering up to the window, he wasmatted in ticks fleas but he made it, so we had to get him cleaned up and rehomed, this time he stayed, but shows you that cats can find their way home, xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Thanks for all the replies. Still no cat. Am going to bang her bowl then shout for her in the garden.

Our little one is currently at the vets being spayed so waiting for the call to say she's ok.

The children (5 and 7) were very upset in the car even though I kept reassuring them that she's in good hands and would be fine.

Then I had the whole " but why does she have to have the op?" and "why can't she have kittens?" And "why can't she go outside until she's had the op" etc ....awkward!!

Anyway they asked me if I wanted to pay £72 for a blood test to check she would be ok for the op. Have never heard of this. I said no as we are broke, but am sitting here worrying that if she isn't ok, it could be my fault for not having the blood test before the GA. Fingers crossed hey!

The cat is BACK! 4am she reappeared, ate 4 bowls of food and slept on my bed. Now just got to stop her going again.

Don't worry, Darmont. Hopefully she's now home and OK. (Seniorboy would likely have had to have bloods done for his big GA dental (if he hadn't just had one) but he was 16 at the time so a whole different ball game.)

oh phew Grin

though can I just take this moment to tell you that this is just a rehearsal for when your dcs go out on their own for the first time to the shops, or as teenagers forget to tell you that they have arranged to stay overnight at their friend's house......

trying to ground cats and teenagers has similar consequences memories of cat flaps torn apart and kicked bathroom doors
