Cat on Heat

Had a bit of a panic last night because of a total change in behaviour with Kitty (new cat owner alert!) so I had a quick look online and I think she may be in heat (body low, bum in air, tail up, yelping and generally looking sorry for herself). She's 5 months old (ish - we're not sure exactly) and due to be spayed in 2 weeks time. She hasn't been outside yet and won't be till she's done, she's eating and drinking like normal but the yelping is driving me a little crazy. Is there anything I can do to relieve symptoms or distract her from yelping all the time so both me and the cat can get some sleep tonight?

call your vet and get her spayed tomorrow.

(btw in rescue spaying at 10- 12 weeks is becoming routine so don't worry about her being too young)

She's old enough to spay so just get her booked in for spaying and microchipping.

There's nothing you can do to distract her, she's a girl with a one track mind right now.

Oh - and if you think you can keep her in, just think again! They have Houdini-like abilities when they want to get out there and strut their stuff.

I would bring it forward but some unexpected bills from a crashed car forced us to push it back in the first place so now we're just waiting for payday

I've given her a good brush down and lots of attention which seems to have calmed her a bit and she's having a bit of a snooze so I guess we'll just have to hope this doesn't last too long.

Could you try ringing the vet and explaining the situation to see if they could do it now and give you two weeks grace to pay the bill?

Cats are induced ovulators (yes it takes sex) and can get stuck in heat until they ovulate so you could be stuck with this. Cats protection have lots of campaigns on at the moment we are running one for them where she would be done for a £5 so give them a ring and see if you are eligible.

My kitty has just been through this.....the yelping bit lasted 2-3 days then she calmed down. I found a heat pad in her basket helped, as did a good sprinkling of cat nip leaves for her to roll around in.

Mine was booked in to be spayed today but vet has discovered a heart problem so it on hold whilst she has more investigations.

Thanks for the advice, I'll contact Cats Protection in the morning and I'll try the heat pad in her bed. She doesn't really care for catnip but I'll give it a go. Thanks for the suggestions

Our kitten was exactly the same last week and it seems to have calmed down. She was rolling all over the floor and yelping and wanted lots of cuddles. She is almost 6 months and being spayed Friday !

I found going shush, shush helped mine calm down (arrived in November heat at Xmas so no way to book her in).

She disturbed a male friend by putting her tail to one side and backing towards him mewing pathetically.

It lasted about a week with the worst being day 1 or 2.
