Lily poisoning

Just wanted to alert people that lilys are deadly poisonous to cats. My boy cat nearly died this week and they think it is because he ingested some pollen from the Lilys my husband bought me. All of the plant is very poisonous and cat owners should not have them in the house.

sorry to hear your cat was ill from your lovely flowers, i love lillies but dare not have them in the house or garden, its surprising how many cat owners are not aware of this i didnt know till a few years ago, also daffodills and ponsiettas are toxic too,

Lilies are particularly dangerous because of the ease with which they shed pollen, which the cat then grooms off.

I've 'mentioned' this to the family and haven't had a lily in flowers ever since. So sorry your cat was ill, OP.

Some lily bouquets are sold with the stamens removed, and they are also trying to breed lilies with much less pollen shedding.
Not just because of cats, but because lily pollen stains very thoroughly, and hayfever sufferers often avoid them.

DS found out about lilies poisoning cats first, several years ago. I found out because he'd dug up and composted all my lilies before telling me.

I'm sorry to hear about your cat, OP but very pleased that all is now well.

TULIPS are poisonous to cats too - my cat has chewed on some lovely tulips a dear friend bought me. Began hypersalivating late last night and also this morning - he is now in the animal hospital on a drip to flush whatever toxin he has ingested out of his body. Only today and having spoken at length with the vet have we made the tulip connection. The Internet suggests it is only the bulb that is toxic but that is very misleading and untrue.

I'm waiting anxiously for an update from the vet.

Hi leelteloo. How did the vet treat your boy? What symptoms did he show and how long did it take for him to get better?

Really hope your cat gets better soon. I heard about this and my DH didn't believe me and refused to chuck out the valentine lillies. I rang the vet to have a chat and he said the whole plant is toxic (the pollen the worst though). Didn't know about Daff's though. Will warn my parents too as the have a small kitten and always have Daff's around!

I had a whole load of lilies in the last house garden. My Last outdoor cat died of kidney failure. I always thought it was down to his breed. Makes you wonder though.

He's home! I am so happy.

He's sleeping on top of the bookcase (his safe place) - he still has a temperature so I need to take him to our vet tomorrow morning to monitor but the hyper-salivating has stopped since 8pm last night so hopefully he is through the worst of it now. Has had 2x antibiotics and been shaved in all manner of areas for the drip.

I need to keep him indoors and the house quiet for the next day or so.

I'm just filling in the claim form for the insurance right now - total cost came in just short of £600 ! [bushock]
