Cat flap

I may have posted about this in the past, but I cannot recall.

Anyhow, I am seriously thinking of getting a rescue cat (if I can find one that can be homed with a 5 year old). I want the cat to be able to come and go as it pleases. My kitchen only has a large sliding patio door. Can I get a cat flap fitted into the glass? I also had a wall on the side of my kitchen that leads to my garden - again, can I get a cat flap fitted in the wall?

And do you know whether this will be really expensive?

A flap can be fitted into the glass or into the wall. If you have it fitted into the glass you will need a new pane of glass (assuming it's double glazed) to be made with the hole in it, and the cost for this depends on the size of the pane. I had it done in a huge patio door and it cost about £350. Getting it in the wall will be much cheaper and will be a builder's labour for about half an hour.

If you have one in the wall do you have to have a catflap inside and out? Is it like a little tunnel?

Also, how does the patio door slide properly with a cat flap in it?

You can buy catflaps with extra tunnel bits - so you use both sides of the cat flap as usual but with a tunnel bit in the middle. And the cat flat in a patio door is more or less flush with the glass. Maybe I'll post a photo of mine if you're interested.

Ooh would you thecat. i had assumed as ours was a sliding patio door we couldn't have a catflap. Although the tunnel thing sounds good too.

ah, thanks thecatneuterer. Your door looks the same size as mine. Is it well sealed? Did the double glazing people sort it all for you or did you have to sort it yourselves?
I think one in the door would be better and maybe less scary for a cat?

Sparkling, I take it your are in the same boat as me then.

Oops, that seems to be a link to the whole cat album rather than the photo. The photo is the far right hand side, fourth one down. You might enjoy the other cat photos though so I'll leave them

That is great thecat really neat too. I will give that some thought thank you so much. Sparkling Cat has the porch that she can get into, and also a cat flap into the garage where she has a bed, but I think a catflap into the house would be useful. I am in and out all day so she isn't out that much without being able to get in the house though.

Paneer - yes it's well sealed. I called some double glazing people. They came and measured the pane and I gave them the cat flap. They then came back with the new pane with the cat flap in it and took out the existing glass pane and replaced it with the new one. They asked me if I wanted to keep the old pane in case I wanted to put it back at some point in the future.

That's odd. So one of you can see only the one photo and one can see the whole album. I'm confused.

I have 17 cats at the moment Paneer. It was 20 till very recently. And yes I have foxes in the garden which I feed and are quite bold, but the fox I'm holding wasn't mine. That was a fox I met when I was in Pets at Home one day. The man he belonged to ran a wildlife rescue and that fox had been brought to him as a tiny cub which was blind. As he couldn't release a blind fox he brought him up as a pet, and then when the fox got a bit older he suddenly regained his sight (something to do with a virus), but the fox was already tame so he just kept him as a pet and took him out on a lead. He was so, so lovely.
