Hyperthyroidism and Vidalta 10mg cost!

Does anyone mind telling me what they are paying for their cat's Vidalta. I've just bought a 30 day supply for my moggy, who was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism last night, and paid about £25.

I've just seen that I can get them online for £11.50 from VioVet and am considering this, although am nervous that they may not be the correct ones - does anyone have any experience?

Am worried about my poor old boy - he's 15 and has lost so much weight. :(

I am in a similar situation - my 15 year old cat, Thomas, was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism before Christmas and is on Vidalta.
The vet is trying to get the dose right - at first Thomas was on one 10mg tablet per day, but a blood test showed that his levels had dropped too low. This was then adjusted to one 10mg tablet every other day, but another blood test showed that his levels had risen up slightly so he is now on one 15mg tablet every other day. The plan is to give him another blood test after about 6 weeks to see how his levels are then.
I've been buying tablets in various amounts until we find the correct dosage. I did check the invoices from the vet to see how much I was paying per tablet and this varied from £2.09 ex VAT when I had only 7 tablets to £1.23 ex VAt when I had 20 tablets. I did ask the vet about the cost of the tablets and he said that once we were sure of the correct dosage I would be able to buy a larger quantity and the cost would come down. I really can't see why there should be such a large difference in the cost just because of the quantity you have. After all, the vet knows that this is going to be an ongoing treatment.
I have also thought of buying the tablets on the internet , but like the op , am concerned that I may not be getting the genuine article.
Would like to hear of any MNers experience of buying animal medication online.

The important thing is that must be a UK based website of which there are many. The UK based ones are all licensed pharmacies inspected and regulated by the VMD so you can be confident that you are getting the right drug. Your vet is allowed to charge for the prescription for you to get these drugs on-line so you need to factor this into your calculation. In my practice a single item prescription is £12. How much they are prepared to prescribe at a time will be small until your cat is stable. Once stable we would give you a prescription for four months worth after which you would need s check up to get another prescription.

Hi my cat has been on Vidalta for 18 months. I was buying from my vets at a cost of over £1 per tablet, like you I was worried about buying on line. But I phoned violet and they put my mind at rest. I now get a written prescription from my vet and they charge me £11 for this, you can scan and send to viovet they keep thus prescription on file and you can orDer anything from 1 tablet to the maximum on prescription! I have used them for a year now and have no problems! And at 38p per tablet plus prescription charge it still only works out 48p each which is less than half!! I do recommend them as I also buy the oral canine sensitivity food as at the vets it's £11 a box and from viovet it's £35 for 4 boxes so thats another £11 per month I save!

I can relate to all these messages. I have had a successful result from an issue I had with my vet relating to the extortionate price I paid for my cats Vidalta 15mg tablets. I disputed the cost of £135.80 (inc.VAT) for 100. They have agreed to refund the price I paid , so I will be getting a refund for 90 tablets. This was after contacting the MD at their head office and sending various e-mails. The great news is that they are giving me a prescription to enable me to purchase the tablets on line , at a reduced price of 69p FROM PET DRUGS ON LINE as you require a script to order on line.. This on line supplier was recommended by the vet. So I will be able to purchase my cats tablets at an acceptable price, but you need to purchase a script first. RESULT YEAH!!!
