Which sex?

On Friday I am going to have a look at some kittens with the aim of one coming to live with me once they are old enough. We already have one big girl who is 7 years old so I am not sure whether a male or female kitten would be better. Any advice?

My girl cat hates all other female cats but seems to like having a flirt with the male tabby over the road.

What's the existing cat's tolerance to other cats?

A boy. He would fit better with a resident female.

She has been an only cat for most of her life. When I first had her I had another cat and they seemed to get along fine. My DH was leaning towards a girl kitten as he thought they would get along better being the same sex.

They might very well get on, pinkandsparklytoo. In cat society, though, females are dominant so a boy (neutered) is going to cede dominance to her - not just as an existing resident and an older cat but as a female. With another female, your odds are not so good if, say, the kitten turned into a right madam. You might get tussles for position when she's maturing.

Much will depend on character - I'm just thinking of likelihoods.

If you're planning to have it desexed (and I hope you are) it really shouldn't matter much. Personality and breed can be as big a factor as gender in that case.

What breed is your current cat - and is she desexed?

Agree with Nature. As long as they're neutered, which they should be at five months, then the sex of the cat really is irrelevant to anything. It's the character of the cat that will determine how it behaves.

My current cat is no specific breed, just a moggy as are the two kittens I am going to look at. She has been desexed as will the new one once it is old enough

Who does your current cat favour if anyone? (ie you or DH?) I'd go along both of you and see if one of the kits gravitates towards the one who isn't the current Person. That might not work because sometimes a person can be the cat person in the family and they all gravitate towards them. Worth a try though.

Probably still a good idea to go along with DH to choose one of them. He'll have to live with him or her as well.

being as you are looking at kittens the sex of the newcomer isnt so important if you had been looking at a more mature cat a boy would be better, you will probably find that when you look at them your future fur baby will pick you, kittens have a habit of doing that or (devil icon) if there are two kittens you may even end up coming home with both of them, been there went to get one kitten and now 6 years later him and his sister still live with me lol
