How to stop a cat scratching

We have a cat that occasionally gets the wind up him and scratches our sofa, we've tried hissing at him, spraying him with water and removing him ( which always results in blood being drawn) but nothing works. We're about to take delivery of a new sofa and we're wondering what would be the best way to stop him from spreading the new sofa.

We had a scratching post and he was completely uninterested in that. Someone suggested putting drops of citronella on it - would that work?

Open to any ideas to save the new sofa please

Lots of cats don't seem to bother with scratching posts. All cats seem to adore these and use them constantly. I have them all over my house. And you could always put a throw over your sofa until you're sure the problem is cured.

When I have new furniture I always spray it with Feliway. So far new sofa delivered last September immediately sprayed with Feliway so far not touch by cats. In context one of these is bastard cats who will scratch anything he can get his claws into!

Thanks thecatneuterer - we've tried those, and even added the additional cat nip, but he just turns his nose up at it.

Feliway might be worth a try, will get some today, although we've had the diffuser in the past and it's made no real difference to him

I don't know if it makes any difference, but when we got him, he was completely wild, and that side of his still comes out occasionally, he is now 5, and was neutered at about 6 months, so we were hoping he would have settled down. We love him to bits although DP has nicknamed him little bastard cat

The feliway sprays different to the diffuser, it doesn't calm them it sort of makes them less interested in scratching.

Putting double sided stickytape on the areas where they scratched worked with ours. They don't like the sticky feeling on their paws.
