Cat Allergy

DH is allergic to cats, though it isn't consistent.

Does having a cat from when its a kitten mean that an allergy will be more mild?

I don't think it works like that. Are you considering getting a cat? Is your dh prepared to take piriton every day for the rest of forever? Because that would be my reality if there was a cat here. Unless you get one of those bald ones...

Some cats have hair which is less irritating than others but I dont think there is an absolute science to it. Unless you get a bald one or he doesnt touch it.

I've always fancied my very own Mr Bigglesworth type cat. But really, have you seen your dh's allergy in action? I cannot put into words just how distressing mine is. No ammount of cuddly cat cuddles will make up for waking up in the middle of the night absolutely frantic because you just cannot take a breath. I can't stay in people's houses where there are animals anymore, not even for a few hours.

I am allergic to cats, but love them, so I have looked into it a bit. Apparently male cats are worse than females for this. So it is best to get one female, and get one that is as short haired as you can find. Some are supposedly best for allergic people, though still provoke reactions in the very allergic. I think that Blue Russian was one such type.

I wouldn't want to. It works and in an emergency I find it works quickly if swigged straight from the bottle. But I wouldn't want to have to put up with it. Cat hair gets everywhere. Get a fish. Imagine how you'd feel if your dh insisted on smoking in the house if you had asthma. To me,with my allergy as it is, it's the same thing.

Piriton makes you drowsy. You will not know if you are allergic to a cat until you are. Allergies can develop, mine did.

If he only has a mild reaction I would get a cat, making sure it is female and very short haired. Keep it out of the bedroom and encourage it to have its own place to sleep, away from the sofa. You may find that he then gets no reaction at all.

Mine also started as just a bit wheezy, it's got worse as I've got older. Until he lives with a cat he'll never know how bad it will get. Mine involves swelling of the lips (attractive..) and eyes, and constriction of my windpipe. My dc would love a cat but it's never going to happen.
