Cat not well, please help

Morning,

Woke up this morning to a very subdued George. He's approx. 10 years old. Was fine last night. There was some sick on the carpet. Whenever I go near him he skulks away to a quiet corner, he has tried to be sick again but is only throwing up bile. He appears to be uncomfortable in his tummy, walking and sitting very gingerly.

He does get occasional hairballs, usually which he passes in the night. Could this be a hair ball or should I ring the vets as soon as they open? Sorry if that sounds a stupid question, but I've never seen him like this before and he's not a happy chappy (and it's distresting to see). I'm not sure if he just needs to throw up though and then he'll feel better.

I would watch him for a few hours first and consider the vet for their afternoon session if necessary. Offer a variety of food and water eg some cooked (cheap) white fish, some boiled chicken breast (include a bit of the cooking water). It might just be a tummy upset and like any of us his tummy might need a rest. My priority would be keeping him hydrated.

Obviously only you can tell if he is very changed from his usual self and deteriorating. Given he is 10 and hasn't been like this before makes me think you think that this is more than just a bug.

Thanks. He is now quietly sleeping and looks restful, so inclined to leave him. Think I'll make him an appointment for the afternoon vet session and ask my neighbour to come in or come back from work to check him at lunchtime. He is prone to be more sensitive than his sister, as he has had occasional bouts of the runs before.

Yes - I'd have him to the vet this afternoon with that combination of symptoms. Let us know how he gets on and good luck.

Took him to the vets this morning, couldn't go to work and worry.
She's given him 2 injections, said his temperature is ok, but suspect he may have eaten something nasty yesterday. So I've left him at home recovering with his sister and asked 'Aunty Sue' (neighbour who looks after them when I go holiday) to pop in at lunchtime to check he's ok.
But he doesn't look well poor thing.

It's awful when they're not well isn't it - partly because you can't explain to them. Still, you've had him to the vet and there's not much more you can do now apart from keep an eye on him generally. Hope he recovers.
