We are getting a new kitten!

Just that. Im half feeling guilty for getting another cat after losing my darling, and half over excited to have a little kit in the house again..

Im halfway persuaded into getting a golden chinchilla persian. I would rather like a siamese, but don't think I could keep one as an indoor cat.

Lots of Siamese are kept as indoor cats, mine isn't - but that means she goes out for about half an hour on warm sunny days, so about twice a year, lol.

I know a lot of Siamese breeders insist on them being sold as indoor cats though.

The only siamese cats I have ever known have been absolutely outdoor cats, and would have run away been unhappy inside, Im sure.

Im happy to take them out on a leash, but figure from the siamese I have known they wouldn't deign to allow themselves to be led like my raggies do.

Ohhh, you reckon I might get away with it then?

Bluepoints are lovely - not that I'm at all biased because that's what mine is, lol.

They're fairly active - but that's the same whether they're in or out and because they're so people centred I think they're fairly good candidates for being indoor cats.

The great thing about Siamese, cat, is that they're focussed primarily on you and not on their environment. I've had house Siamese (chocolate boys) for many, many years and they've all been the happiest campers. If you and your lifestyle permit, they could be the best housecats ever.

I'd ask Cozieseniorboy for a cat's view - but he's upstairs snoring on his electric blanket. At over 18, he's permitted.

Ah, 18! That's a grand old age for a cat! Cozie, do yours not run for the door? Im home a lot since we home ed, and I already have feline shadows who give me a running commentary on the day. I did think raggies were meant to be quiet but mine sing. All the time.

Ill have to put it to family vote, but hearing yours dont mind the indoor life, Ild love to finally have a siamese of my own! My aunt had two beautiful seal points that I always admired. The existing cats are pretty chilled out, so that shouldn't be a problem.

I'm going to (uncharacteristically) recommend against you getting a Siamese, cat. I didn't realize that you had existing cats.

The thing that makes them such superb housecats (their focus on people) also means that they can be jealous as all get out of any other cat on the block. (They're fine with dogs - regard them as a lesser and worthy-of-being-ignored species, I think.)

You might be OK if you got a kitten who would 'fit in'. I wouldn't bank on it lasting though.

PS - just go to any Siamese Rescue site and see.

Ive two ragdolls. My third died recently. Do they really not like being with other cats? Now Im sad! I love their pretty angular faces and singing voices. Perhaps Ild be better sticking to what I know works and getting another ragdoll, or perhaps a persian.

Oh Lordy! They like people best, that's the problem. I'd say not, cat and stick with what you know - but other posters may have different views.

Mine tolerates the other cat, they don't fight and don't have any issues sharing the same house. They'll quite happily sleep in DD's bed, but with DD between them. They very occasionally play together, but that's rare.

The other cat however is not allowed to sit with me, the Siamese has decided that I am her person (DP got her, not me, she was supposed to be his but she had other ideas) luckily the other cat is a typically aloof moggy and only comes to me for a fuss every couple of days, lol.

See Im missing "my" cat terribly. Dcat 1 was my cat, and I miss him every single day. Dcat 2 is very much dd's cat, and to my shock with Dcat1 gone, Dcat 3 has decided he loves and I mean LOVES ds, and has become his shadow. Im very much second best, and dammit I miss being kneaded and stared at.

The raggies dont give each other much space, they are all over each other. Perhaps a siamese would think that a perfect hell if they try and groom, chase and generally bother him!

Well now you've got me all conflicted because I know exactly what you mean.

The trouble with Siamese is that they decide who 'Their Person' is going to be. I've been lucky in that all the boys I've had have decided that I'm 'The One'. (Even my mom's cats - but that's another story and more suited to another board.)

Imagine if you got a new Siamese kitten and they decided that ds was 'It' - with consequent long term horrible spats with DCat3. Doesn't bear thinking about, does it ?

I would go to the nearest rescue, cat. (Or how about taking on one of FTR's half-Siamese. She's been awfully quiet recently but they must be about 10-11 weeks now and I would guess she hasn't found home for all 7.)

dcat3 is very much my "problem child cat", and Im happy he has finally settled and is more confident and content.

Im starting to wonder if Im not being a bit selfish and should leave it a while longer, or else just go for what I know, and add another ragdoll. I know where I am with the grooming, the personality and their tolerance thresholds and that they are mostly fine with being inside...

I don't think I should risk a siamese and it not working. I might have to leave it a bit longer, if Im going to get another raggie, otherwise Im going to feel terribly disloyal. Sorry, I must sound like a bit of a nutter!

At least your mother liked cats, Cozie. Mine shot at them with catapults when they entered our garden and hated them with a passion.

It's not selfish to want love, cat. It's just that with cats (especially Siamese) there's no certainty. Maybe you should, after all, fling yourself into the unknown and get a kitten. (I definitely wouldn't get an older cat in your case.) Go with your heart and so on. As long as you're prepared for what might come. It could be wonderful or it could be a disaster.
