My cat followed us to school...

Bit like Mary had a little lamb but in this case, DD has a little kitten. He is about 6 months old now. Just followed DD and me down the hill to school for her afternoon nursery session. 0.5 miles. He got to the playground, got freaked by the noise and left. I got home and about 5 mins later he came in. Walked in through the cat flap and passed out on the floor just inside the door. He is knackered. It is a very steep hill on the way back and he has just walked / skitted a whole mile.

Does anyone else's cat do this? I was a bit worried as he is not used to traffic where we live. And there is a v busy road on the way down / back up!

My mil has a cat that does this. She's an odd cat though. Likes nothing more than rough play and is quite mouthy.

Yes. When I was a kid, one of my mum's cats used to walk with her down to the phone box, wait, and walk back up with her. I think this was the same cat who would walk halfway up to the shops with her and then apparently think 'bugger this' and go back home.

The Lodger does this - in fact he thought himself so au fait with streets that I used to worry myself silly. He'd saunter across main roads to meet us - and lie down in the middle of a street on a sunny day and start to stretch and wash. (I'd be coming back from the shops and suddenly see him there in the middle of the road.)

There's a principle in sailing that steam gives way to sails. I think he might have got a version of that. And pushed it. I reckon he has 99 lives and not just 9.

None of my cats have ever done this and it's not fair, dammit - your kitten sounds ace.

My friends' cat used to find them in the local pub - he'd appear on their laps having found them on a Friday night in a packed noisy room.

Very impressed with the cat who could locate his minions in the pub.

Of course, if they'd left an extra pouch out he wouldn't have bothered.

When I was younger, one of our cats used to follow us everywhere. We had to resort to biscuits or milk to occupy him.

I had a cat that used to come with us on dog walks as well.

Our cat doesn't do this , but one of our neighbours takes his for a walk each day and it is extremely cute the way it walks with him for a bit, then wanders off for a little look round while his owner waits, then returns for a bit more of the walk,

One of my childhood cats used to come out riding with us. If we were mustering cattle he used to follow us out to where the cows were then he used to sit on the gate post and wait for us to bring them through then he would demand a ride home inside my sister's T-Shirt.
He also used to come fishing in the river with us. He would sit on the bank and eat the tiddlers as we caught them. He was a magnificent character and I judge all cats by him.

Awww lovely tales. I am glad my cat isn't the only one. I had another cat that was a bit of a follower - he once came to the top of my road with me to the hall on Election Day and they let him in while I voted. But that wasn't anywhere near the distance and he was also much older.

I was wondering whether I would have to start locking him in when I went out in case he got lost / knocked over. But tbh getting kids out of the house in the mornings is enough of a stress. Am not sure I can also cope with confining the cat.

My cat follows me to work (ten min walk), and often turns up hours later to walk back with me (particularly impressive as I return in an irregular pattern).

She also sleeps on the bed and was attempting to shove my legs over a bit last night! Pah! No chance

Dcat1 has been into nursery with us
Dcat2 stops at the doorstep though, which is better.

As a kid, my cat would yowl outside my classroom door. My mum had to give the school keys to my house so me and a secretary could go and let her in. Luckily we lived opposite my school!

Ah so not the only school visiting cat then. But it is a mile round trip so am hoping that might stop him from doing it every day!

I had one used to go to the shop with me and another that would go to the end of the street and not cross the busy main road between my house and the pub but would sit looking accross at me.

I've had two 'followers'. Always had to check they were in before walking anywhere, otherwise I had a little shadow. Cute, but annoying and potentially unsafe if, like mine, your cat is a total dodo around traffic.

My cat is also a follower. She accompanies us on the school run but darts into the bushes once it starts getting a bit crowded. She also comes on dog walks where she taunts the dog mercilessly.

She zooms back and forth in a "Look at me, I'm not on a lead" fashion. Once the dog is off the lead she darts up a tree and hangs out of the lowest branches taking fake swipes towards the dog, trying to get her all worked up. The final stage is to run down the tree and up another nearby tree, passing the dog on the way so the dog gives chase. End result is dog runs into tree.

Although this tactic has been her undoing she got a bit enthusiastic at the fake swiping stage and lost her grip and fell out of the tree . The dog just stood there with a confused expression wondering if it was part of the game.

We had one that used to follow,when I was at 6th form I used to waitress, so walked to the main road for a lift, cat followed me most of the way to the main road, but I used to get dropped home early morning and no cat, so I used t go out at stupid o'clock to find the cat where she had stopped still waiting for me.

None of my cats have ever done anything so interesting.

I love the idea of the cat zooming around showing off that its not on a lead!
