Yowling cat

A local cat has taken to hanging out in and around our garden which is not a problem. The only thing is that it yowls a lot and it's very loud. It quite likes sitting by our front door and yowling and is not bothered what time of day or night it does this. It's been doing this for 4 days now. As I've never had a cat I was hoping that someone here could shed some light on this behaviour. Is it normal? Or is something wrong? I've tried to approach it but it is nervy and won't come near me.

It rather sounds like a female on heat yelling 'Come And Get Me Boys' - in which case, it should all quiet down soon. Can you tell whether it's a girl?

PS. If it is, and the cat is also nervy around you, there's a good chance that she's a feral cat who has chosen your garden as her stamping ground - so you'll need to keep an eye on eg any garden sheds etc in a couple of months or so.

You could become a cat owner sooner than you thought!

Thanks cozie - it didn't turn up today (first day in ages) so probably was a female on heat. Hopefully, I'll be able to sleep at night now!
