The time has come.....My Burmese Boy

I have named changed as been here a very very long time and this would definitely out me.

I have had many Burmese cats over the last 35 years, and have had 2 killed in the last year, my darling Burmese kitten was killed by 2 dogs in a field at the back of our house in September, he was only 8 months old and so adorable.

We also had one killed on the lane last year, only 14 months old, unfortunately by someone we knew.

Now, having collecting my 16 year old Burmese and two others from the cattery this morning it's the time to put the old boy to sleep. I was in 2 minds before we went away, but it didn't seem right then, but this morning sitting in his basket his eyes are dull, he has lost 1 kg in 11 days, a total of 2.5 kg in 3 months and is falling over, he is confused.

I think he has been waiting for me to come home, am I daft?

He was distressed when I got him home but have stroked him to sleep and he has stayed that way, he is cold, and doesn't respond to my voice.

I am sad, I cried when I phoned the vet, she is lovely and she will clear the surgery of appointments either side and will leave us with him.

He's had a good life, but I love him so much, so does DH and I m crying as I write this, and I"m having to be brave as 3 littles here today. They will miss him too as he used to sleep with them on the floor mats, and they could do anything to him, put him in a pushchair, doll's cot, put hats on him, he has always been here.

The other 2 are close to me all the time, on my desk pushing their faces in mine, all over the keyboard, they normally ignore me after the cattery, they won't go near Old boy, I think they know too.

I'm so sorry. We lost one of our Maine Coons this week (to a fox), and it's heartbreaking. My thoughts are with you.

And the others definitely knew something was up - my big lad has been surgically attached to me and even the small aloof one has been giving me kisses.

Update, we too him to the vet and she immediately said he is in kidney failure, she could smell it, hence the other cats staying clear of him and the vet said they would too.

He slept all day and his eyes went even duller, but he asked to go and and did a poo, so, dignified to the end.

He was put to sleep curled up in his basket, just as I'd taken him in. It was very peaceful and the right thing to do. His ashes will come back to join the other two in the sunny spot where he used to sit and survey the garden.

Both the ohers slept on our bed last night, but it is quiet this morning

So sorry burmese - but you knew it was the right thing. They leave such a hole in your lives when they go but at least you'll be able to remember him in his sunny spot of a morning.

So sorry.

Take pride that you let him go with dignity, on his own terms. It's the hardest decision, but a final gift of dedication.

I'm so sorry to hear what you are going through.
My little tortie (dsh) is 19.5 and I think she is coming to an end.
Her pupils are dilated and she is walking in to things but still eating and using her tray. She has managed to climb on my bed for cuddles every night. She seems happy anyway. Washing herself and enjoying her brushing.
Whilst she is not in pain (it seems) I am keeping her home with me and praying she drifts away peacefully.
I think the journey to vets will kill her, she hasn't been for 10 years. Last time we took her she hyper ventilated, really scary.

Oh crystal5 that sounds very similar to how my Burmese was, I think if I hadn't taken him to the vet, he may have passed away in the night, but I didn't want him to go on for days.

I have a fabulous holistic vet, she didn't come out of the room afterwards to say goodbye as she didn't like to leave him on his own.

So sorry for your trouble.

So very sorry. Take comfort that you gave him a good, happy life and lots of love and that he loved you and his family in return. It only hurts so much because you loved each other so much. One day it won't hurt so bad and you'll have so many fond memories to make you smile. Our darling cat George died after being hit by a car in 2008, we had him cremated and planted a tree in his memory, the tree is blooming and we call it the George tree. We have another cat now called Maxwell, another affectionate and loving boy who we all adore, George's portrait by my dd is still on the mantelpiece, he'll always be loved and a family member. Be good to yourself x
