How do I stop this behaviour?

My cat has suddenly started going into one corner of the room to scratch the wallpaper.

He has scratching posts elsewhere in the house and continues to use them.

However every evening he persists in going into the corner of the room and trying to scratch.

He only does this when we are around so we have deduced it is somekind of attention seeking behaviour.

Can you still buy those orange smelling sprays to discourage cats from going into a certain area?

Any other tips gratefully received.

Is there something that has changed in the house for him to be stressed about? We had problems with our cat and the only fix was ameliorating the stress...

No changes I can think of.

He is pretty laid back.
He will happily sit in the room all day without going into that corner.

As soon as we are in there in the evening and settled -he starts .

There is a very old antique table in the corner we wondered if he could smell something on it.

I think you said it yourself - attention seeking behaviour. Is he young or having to stay inside because of bad weather or something - when he normally goes out?

Have you tried playing with him of an evening to get it out of his system?

Ours scratches the bed when he wants us to get up, sometimes we are very unreasonable and lie in until 7.30am. He knows DH will shout at him then get me to get up and feed him Angry

I have the feliway spray in a bottle and I have found this good for deterring him from certain areas and I spray his extra tall scratching post with a catnip spray to attract him.

Have you seen the squeaking mouse in pets at home? it's hours of fun for them. Nothing better than a toy that sounds like it's in distress, having chased mice around my house trying to rescue them I can say it's acutally pretty realistic.

Have laid tin foil on the floor in the corner and so far he has not ventured in.

Thanks for all the tips
