Blood in kitten's poo

New addition had his first jabs and a clean bill of health this morning. He just used the tray and a passes about 1/4 teaspoon of fresh blood plus a little streaking in his poo. Have called the vet and they say it could be a reaction to his jabs and keep an eye on him. Not keen to go to work and leave him for four hrs. He has been pinching the older cat's food including some (bone free, I checked thoroughly) pieces of roast chicken. Have had to seperate a couple of rough play sessions with the older cat. No hissing or serious assaulting but when biting starts I do clap my hands to startle and seperate them. Any ideas or experience of this? The Cat's protection say all kittens are wormed before leaving so I assume he has been.....

PS he's 12 wks and otherwise seems fine.

Messaging to shamelessly bump this thread and wishing I hadn't googled reactions to immunisations FFS!! Have to go work and leave him now. Very sleepy and squeaks when I pick him up.

I think it's normal for them to be sleepy right after jabs. The squeaking when handled, if a new thing, migh indicate pain. Little kittens can go downhill very fast, I'd have him back at the vet.

My kitten had blood in poo on and off for first 3 months. Vet was not too concerned as all else was well.

I had a similar experience to secretsquirrels, my kitten has really runny explosive poo (sorry!) with blood in it for weeks when we first got him. Vet didn't seem worried as he was always well in himself. Although i was told that food with jelly is often better than with gravy and to stick to one brand for a while and to try to ensure he didn't eat lots of "human" food.

Yes the food was crucial. He was prone to explosive squits. The vet said she had come across this before and some cats just have delicate digestive systems.
He is a year old now and I have learned never to vary his diet, stick to one brand with jelly and no scraps ever.

Thankyou secret squirrel and crocodiledundee. Good to know others have had this experience and all been ok!! He's very lethargic and a bit wobbly but had some cat milk and a tiny bit of food. His jabs have really knocked him for six. Have 6 people round for tea tonight but he's getting tucked away in the bedroom. No handling and no noise. I had him on felix and then whiskas kitten. I've gone back to felix as he didn't have a runny bum with it. Funny cos my other dearly departed ginger Tom was exactly the same on whiskas. Difficult to stop him scoffing all big kitty's food. Called vet again and said just to keep an eye on him. Having worked with kids for years, I know all this is normal for them after jabs. I just panic when it's a teeny kitten!! My kitten had blood in her poo everytime she ate bits of dog food (hooked out from under appliances) but also I was giving her too much food at each meal. If your kitty is unwell after his vaccination that's probably not connected to the blood, which is to do with his food.

Thanks portrait, I suspected it wasn't linked. He's still very sleepy but cosied in bed with us now. Don't think I'll get much sleep as not sure he's strong enough to wiggle out if we roll on him. DP says of course he is. Kitten not enjoying being apart from us though!!

I stuck with Felix in Jelly, except when he had really bad diarrhoea and then we used Royal Canin sensitive. It's not a kitten food but the vet said it was better to use that so he was getting some nutrition than kitten food which went straight through.

I generally stick to that too, Secret. They get a 'special' tea on a Friday and a Sunday lunch but other than that its cat/ kitten food only.

My cat (now 4) still gets blood in her poo if I feed her the wrong food. The 'wrong food' being anything other than whiskas!!!

I hope your cat is better now and that you got to the bottom of it (excuse the pun!)
