Think my kitten has a broken leg :-(

Anyone had a kitten with broken leg? We have 2 nine week old sisters, came home tonight and 1 is not bearing any weight on one leg, and it just looks broken. She is still happy, cuddly and playful. Going to keep her with me all night and putting in cat basket at bed time so she can't get into any more trouble and then off to vet first thing. Just wondered if anyone had any experience of what the recovery time etc is like? Thanks

If your kitten has a broken leg, she must see a vet tonight.

It would be beyond awful to leave her with no pain relief overnight. Can you not ring a vet?

I have rung my vet, who advised as per my above post, the kitten does not appear in any pain and is currently asleep on my lap, vet said fine to wait until morning, just keep her quiet.

Our kitten broke her leg when she was about 7 weeks old. Took her to the vets who didn't diagnose it straight away and sent us home telling us kittens are tough and she has just sprained it and it would heal. Wasn't happy as she wouldnt bear any weight on it so took her back the next day and insisted on an X-ray. She had broken it quite badly, no idea how though! We ended up having to take her to a specialist as she needed an operation to pin the bones together and she had a pot on for weeks.

I felt awful as we had let her, on the advice from the vet struggle round with a broken leg for over a day.

Be warned if it is broken and you don't have insurance (luckily we did) it may cost you a fair bit.

I did. She broke it before she was insured (only a few months old,still a house cat & i thought it unnecessary as she wasnt going out & therefore wouldnt injure herself) very badly. Had to take her to specialist vet orthopaedic surgeon to have screws & plates put in to hold it together. It cost almost £1000. Which my parents kindly paid & I paid back slowly! She is now 3.5 years old,runs around mad,climbs & jumps etc. You wouldn't know from looking at her,except I do know because her right hind knee joint is slightly larger.

Our vet initially said it wasn't broken too but after I insisted on an x ray it was so badly broken that they suggested amputation or putting to sleep as the only options. Broke my heart & I did lots of research to find the surgeon who fixed it. She had a cast on for weeks & had to be confined to a crate for a couple of months. That wasn't much fun! For anyone. I hope your kitten's leg isn't broken,but if it is there is hope.

Not a broken leg, but my boy broke his pelvis at 4 months old!

I came here for advice and was distraught, thinking it was the end. Turned out that kittens are very tough things and through lots of vet trips, an operation, medication and cage rest, he is now absolutely fine (1 year on)

Luckily he was insured - it only cost me £75 out of a bill of about £600+. The worst bit of it all was cage-resting him for about 8 weeks, he was not a happy chappy.

How is he LisaD1?

My kitten broke his leg yesterday! He's four months old. The vet has put a plaster cast on and advised cage rest for two weeks, i.e. no running or playing! He's still a bit groggy from the GA yesterday but I think he'll be climbing the walls by the end of two weeks.
