9wk old kitten vaccinated today and now hiding

Took 9wk old kitten in for first jabs this morning. He was fine when we got back but I went out at 11 and he was hiding under the sofa and hasn't yet emerged. Is this normal? Prior to going to the vets he was bold as brass but now is hiding in the furthest recess of the sofa which means I couldnt haul him out without furniture moving. Don't want to disturb him if he is just sleeping off his jabs.

Is this to be expected?

Pretty well to be expected - he's just been injected with virus for the first time and he will be feeling sleepy as his system is gearing up to it - some cats can react a wee bit more strongly than others.

I'd just let him sit quietly (don't try to haul him out) but ensure that he has food and water close by and a tray within easy reach. Some tempting morsel of chicken or something might be nice.

He should be showing signs of improvement and more liveliness by tomorrow. If he's still hiding by tomorrow evening and/or there's no sign of the food or water having been touched or tray having been used, I'd give the vet a phone. It's not impossible to have a bad reaction although they're thankfully pretty rare.

I remember crazykitten's first vacs. She sleeps with me on the next pillow (covered in her fave dressing gown), and she was sooooo sleepy,when I turned my heffer body over,she rolled off her pillow,and was laid on her back in the crevice of my boobs with her 4 legs in the air!

Thanks. He is still hiding but did come out to eat when I put food down and has used his tray so I am hoping he is just feeling a tad rough. Wish I could just dispense calpol like I did with my DCs! Will try and sort photo for profile!

Sounds OK then. Just let him sit quietly and he should be over it soon.

It's good he's been out for food etc- keep a close eye on him And I'd probably check on him overnight too. My cat almost died from a reaction to vaccines, it's very rare and she's 9 now and fine but definitely keep checking.

ok - am worried now. still hiding. will check but hard to reach him as he is right at the back of the sofa and only way to get to him will be to dismantle sofa as it is a corner sofa...

pics on profile. Katsuma is the tabby (the one who is hiding); Diavlo is the black one (who is NOT hiding and is hassling me ... constantly)

Sorry, try not to worry with my cat there was no is she I'll or not she wouldn't / couldn't move, we had to drip water into her mouth and temp was 105. Your ct sounds ok.

Don't worry, NoNo. You can get a reaction but as Bea said it's very rare. Your boy sounds fine - he's eaten and used his tray but is just a little sleepy and probably feels a little 'odd' (for him) so he's staying out of the way. It's a standard reaction, particularly when there's another kitten around because he won't want to be bothered with Diavlo - he's leaving you to be bothered instead!

Thanks. He has now emerged looking rather lacklustre and not putting up much of a fight when the big black kitty pushed him out from the food bowl. But he hasn't gone back under the sofa after his attempt at eating so I think he will be fine. Thanks all!

If it is one of the adjuvanted vaccines it is to be expected. If it was Purevax the non-adjuvanted vaccine it is really unusual and worth a call to your vet. Purevax is a vaccine light years ahead of human vaccines using very cool canary pox technology hence the virtual absence of these side effects. Having used it for 18months I would never go back to another type of cat vaccine.

Vet did mention he might be a bit sleepy so I assume it isn't the funky vaccine. I didn't get a vaccine card so I can't check.

If they mentioned sleepiness it is almost certainly not Purevax then. Normal vaccine reaction should be gone by 24 hours my money is on a hungry kitty at about 4am!

Out of interest - once you use a certain type of vaccine do you have to stick with it or does it not matter if you chop and change? (For boosters etc.)

Our wee man got his first vaccination about a month ago and he was not himself at all for the day afterwards - he was very sleepy and clingy, to the point I stayed in all day with him (such a pushover!). By about 24hrs after the vet's he was louping about the house as usual so I am sure your wee one will be fine, just feeling a bit sorry for himself.
