Help a complete novice what do I feed my kitten?

We are getting our kitten this week. He is 12 weeks old. I know the owners only give dried foods, not sure how often yet or what brand.

Do I keep the kitten only on dried food or a mixture of dry and wet?

I'm a complete novice but DH grew up with cats but was never responsible for feeding them so hasn't a clue either!

Owners also give it bits of roast on a sunday - I presume just the meat????

I'm so clueless, it can't be that hard can it?

Have a look at this, bought it a while back and it's amazing..... Raising-Cats-Naturally by Michelle-Bernard can buy it on Amazon, basically states that cats should be on a 100% raw meat diet and it some meat can't be sourced eg. heart / liver then supplements can be added.

if that is too much hassle then food should all be wet and highest meat content as possible plus some raw chicken / rabbit, including bones now and again, I also give my kittens the odd bit of raw fish too. I feed my kittens 3-5 times a day as their demand changes day to day. They are bengal boys, super healthy and absolutely stunning. Good luck.

Try mainly wet with a tiny bit of dry in a day - seems to work better for mine. Too much dry is generally agreed to be bad for their kidneys, as cats mainly take in water via their food rather than drinking it.

PS: We're going to need photos of said kitten, I think...;)

I did find it very weird that they only fed it dry - I presumed they had been pushed a product by the vet!

Any advice on the best wet. I will change him over slowly of course. Looked at the supermarket shelves today and aisle I have never visited and was very overwhelmed.

When you first bring the kitten home keep it on the dry for a week or two, just because it will be in a stressful, new situation and the last thing it needs is tummy upset from diet change.

After kitten has settled in I would wean it on to wet food slowly. I personally feed raw, but a complete (must say so on the tin) canned food with the highest meat content you can find is totally fine. You will find a lot more options online (Zooplus is good) than you will in the supermarket.

I would just buy a kitten approved food in the supermarket, if you don't know what he's used to then go for what looks alright, you'll have to wing it. Any kitten specific make should be alright to start.
