how many hours a day do indoor cats sleep for?

I've only had this cat for about 2 months. (she is 7/8)

She is an indoor cat and won't venture outside

She spends most of the day and night asleep, just sitting on pillow

Is this normal for indoor cats?

My 1yo outdoor cats sleep about 18 hours/day, I reckon. Minimum.

mine is a bit younger - sometimes he does seem to sleep all day other times he wants to be on my lap all day but then he does often fall asleep on lap

when i see my outside cats one of them is always asleep in the garden somewhere

I'm just worrying that she might depressed because she was re-homed and might be missing her family

All my other cats have been really bouncy and fun , but they were outdoor cats

I'm just worrying, perhaps unnecessarily....I just don't want her to be sad

Mine is a house cat and pretty elderly but he sleeps about 20/22 hours a day, minimum. The exact time depends on various factors - time of day, time of year, whether his electric blanket is on, whether I'm up on the bed reading (he likes that), whether he's got a full belly etc etc etc.

The only thing that would slightly niggle me about your girl if I was you was if she was actually 'sitting' ie 'cat couchant' but paws tucked in. That may have been just the words you happened to use but in my book that would be a doze and not a real sleep. Sleep is when they're curled up in a ball on one side - or flat out if they're warm and comfy.

Don't worry at all though if she's not completely relaxing. It'll come. Mine arrived late to me and took a month or two before he started sleeping deeply enough to snore or to whuffle with dreams. The fact that she's on a pillow in the open and not hunkered backside down in some obscure corner means that at the very worst she's halfway there.

Just keep on with the love, cuddles and playing games.

Mine sleeps about 21-22 hours a dayhes old now but has always slept loads.

He has access to outside, has done for years but will only venture out if no one is looking at him and then for about 5 mins at most.

BlueBirdsNest · 02/09/2012 17:49

aww sweetkitty . only when no is looking at him

I know it's funny if you look at him he runs back inside!

My 11 yer old house cat sleeps about 20 odd hours I think. If she has a disturbed day for whatever reason you can really see the impact on her the next day.

She also has access to outside but will only go out with us and even then won't venture far from the door.

As others have said, keep giving her gentle affection so she feels safe and she will soon be giving off happy vibes
