my poor dil to be phoned her local vet today to say her cat had been knocked over and looks like her rear leg was broken, vets reply was "oh we cant see her as we are at lunch"!!!!!....she ended up at the next closest vet (vet savers) now seeing as the bone was sticking out of her skin, the vet stated hmmmm not too sure we will need an xray!!!...£600.00 later yes her leg is severely broken its going to cost around £1500 to have it repaired using a plate, but it does not always go to plan so it will be another £650.00 if we have to amputate the leg, she also has internal bleeding so she may not survive the night, poor little cat went down hill in a matter of minuets and the vet suggested she was put down, and had the nerve to charge another £90.00!! i really dont get what the expense is £600 for an xray???...

Poor cat Sad

My cat had an X-ray in 2010 for £175, £600 seems ridiculous, are you sure?!

omfgkillmenow · 28/08/2012 22:51

hmm I would be tempted to let that one go to court and the judge decide

NPPF · 28/08/2012 23:00

Sounds like a shark. £600 for an X-ray is robbery.

Meowmi · 29/08/2012 00:19

£600 for an xray is a total ripoff!! Shock

I am with Vet savers and when my 6 month old kitten was ill i was in there nearly every day. He needed xrays near the end and total cost for all treatment over the week was about £450, that was for drugs, xrays, blood tests and euthanasia.

DH had lost his job at the time and i told them cost was an issue. They were really good about breaking everything down for me and only did what was absolutely nessecary. They kept it to a minimum

I think alot of vets these days will charge whatever they like as they know that you are not going to want to deny your pets treatment, not to mention doing stuff that isn't nessecary (as you DIL has found out!!)

Most people wont argue or question it, but if you do, then more often than not the price will be lowered as they know that you "could" up and leave without them getting a penny from you and sadly some vets are driven by the money and not the care of the animals.

My old vet certainly was money driven, he was a total cunt!! (excuse my language) but he really doesn't like people or animals and should be struck off!

But of course not all vets are like this, sometimes as in my case they are more worried that the animals may not get vital treatment so can and will compromise a price!

kittyatmyfoot · 29/08/2012 11:51

thanks everyone, im seeing dil today and going to get a copy of her bill, i think they took full advantage of her being such a young lady on her own and distraught about her little cat..and i WIlLL be visiting vetsavers to calmly discuss the matter (unless its the rude arrogant vet nurse) then i will be less than calm x

My huge 40 kg dog was xrayed last week incl anesthetisic to knock him out and painkillers for afterwards was £160 ....

Lonecatwithkitten · 29/08/2012 21:46

Gosh seems very expensive I can do x-ray and amputation with 2 nights in hospital with all follow up care for about £450. I'm in expensive South East and always have a registered bet nurse or vet available to triage in this situation.

Lonecatwithkitten · 29/08/2012 21:46

Sorry obvious Vet nurse not bet. Mine are also lovely and never rude.

Meowmi · 31/08/2012 19:42

Just To add to this Re vetsavers.

I had to take my 11 year old cat today to the vet i am concerned about him as he has been showing signs of being senile the last 2 years but is getting worse. He also had problems with his mouth.

I was given an extended appointment to discus the dementia at length as i wanted all the options with regards to his long term health and i must say the vet was worse than bloody useless!!!

I was kept waiting 15 minutes over my allotted time so she kind of rushed me through the apt.
I came out of there none the wiser, didn't have a clue what she was talking about and she never asked one question about his health or state of mind (she wasn't english)

She took one look at his mouth and told me he is in pain!!
How she can make this diagnosis without question i'm not sure.
And was all set to book him in for a dental without any other health checks, when i mentioned this she then added that they can do blood and urine tests to check his organ function.

I asked for more information about the dementia and what to expect in the future and she told me she couldnt tell me until the test results came back!! Hmm

I went to reception to pay and asked what i was being charged for. The receptionist had to google the drugs as i didn't have a clue what had been prescribed. She started to get arsy with me so i just paid the consultation charge and she made it quite clear that she wasn't happy that wouldn't pay for the drugs. I took my card and walked out. Am so Angry

Wont be going back there for sure, I'm going to take my cat first thing Monday morning to another vet who can explain in clear english everything i need to know

They were really good with me in 2009 but sadly now am thinking yes its about the money judging by the way i spoke to today!!!

kittyatmyfoot · 01/09/2012 00:20

it just drives me so mad, i have already had a run in with vetsavers, my dog kept getting ear infections, we were told some dogs just get them??...lost count how many times in 1 year we had to go back for antibiotics and ear cleaners, what used to make me laugh was they would charge me for the antibiotic injection and on my bill it showed they charged me for the antibiotic and then another 7.00 for actually giving it to him!!!.......it turned out the poor thing had cancer in his ear which spread to his brain and we had to have him pts also when i took my kitten in to have his knackers off i was quoted 26.99 but when we took him in were asked if we wanted him to have any pain killlers??? my reply was hell yes would you want your knackers off with no pain relief but of course it was extra...we were then asked if we wanted blood, urine and poo tests done!!! what for i asked.....just incase he has any problems...WTF why would i want to pay for unnecessary tests just in case he may have a problem...ended up paying 72.00 for knackers off, slightly more than the 26.99 they quoted me.....can not wait for DIL to bring the bill over cos im really hoping the gestapo trained receptionist is there they day i go in for a "little chat" will keep you posted :)

Xray prices are based on the size of the animal, £600 would be rediculous for a huge dog, let alone a cat. I paid £50 for my male cat to be neutered, he's very large, the average price of a female spay is around £60-65 so they are expensive for that too. We had to have one of our cats PTS last month, it was £80 which inc the cost of cremation without ashes being returned, the cremation part was £24 of the bill.

I hope that they give her a refund, disgusting Sad

kittyatmyfoot · 02/09/2012 16:31

@ rikalaily they charged her 90.00 for cat to be pts and asked if she wanted them to cremate the cat at an extra cost of £52.00 without ashes being returned....i really do think they took full unacceptable advantage of her i really do

We have a local vet at the bottom of our garden. 4 years ago they charged ?45 for a castration, think it's less than double that for spaying.

Sparklingbrook · 02/09/2012 18:52

Has any of the large bill got anything to do with it being a Sunday? ie out of hours?

Meowmi · 02/09/2012 19:43

sparkiling Op posted on the day it happened...Tuesday, so am assuming that wouldn't apply.

Sparklingbrook · 02/09/2012 19:48

Doh! Thanks Meow. Sorry kitty.

Meowmi · 02/09/2012 20:03

Kitty, i thought my branch was costly but that is just ridiculous!
I hope you give it to them with both barrells when you complain!

My sil had FIL's dog put to sleep at our branch last month and it cost about £100 for euthanasia and cremation so it really does sound like they preyed on your DIL's vulnerability and upset.

I am fuming on her behalf!!!

I dont like the way that they dont give a clear price list. I looked for one and eventually found it stuck on a wall behind the receptionists counter, round the corner so it couldn't be easily seen by joe public. I only managed to see it by going to the side of counter and leaning right over.

And i do honestly think that this is because they dont have a set price for anything and just charge what they think they can get away with sadly!!

I too was perscribed a drug that really wouldn't do any good at this moment in time without knowing the results of the the blood tests first. Nor did she mention that this drug would have to be given for the rest of my cats life. She didn't even ask if i would like to try it.

And the fact she didn't examine him or ask any questions re his health, how on earth could she know that this would do any good.
