Vet won't discuss over phone

ohhhh help

Got a rescue cat, he's only 2.
For the past two weeks he's had haematuria and cystitis, he's been to and fro to the vets but any chance we had to get a sample has been scuppered and the meds aren't helping....

So the vet took him in today to catheterise and take a urine sample.

All done by 3pm this afternoon but they rang me and said I had to see the vet at 6 tonight, I don't know what they've found.

I'm scared it's going to be something really awful. He's only a baby.

Keep as cool as you can and go up there at 6. It may simply be that it's complicated and the vet wants you there anyway to take him home so would rather talk face to face.

Hope everything works out ok. I would be worried as well if it was a matter they didnt want to discuss over the phone. Whatever happens, just know that you loved that cat as much as you could have in the short space of time you had him and made its life happier.

Well, it's FLUTD.

We're to give him antibiotics, Cystaid and try to get more hydration into him.

They also think stress is causing this but I don't get it, he's the most laid back cat ever. My friend who works with CPL thinks he may have had a scrap with an unneutered tom locally.

Ultimately if we can't eliminate the stress (!) we should consider rehoming him - which would be a shame as we really can't see how he's stressed.

Not quite as bad as I suspect you were fearing then, glitter.

A bad scrap can really shake them for a week or two even if they win so if you've heard yowls or seen fur tufts lying around, your friend might be right. The frequent trips to the vet won't be helping, either, especially if he's a rescue. Keep him in and quiet for a good bit is my thought.

I really thought it was much, much worse than that so relieved it isn't.

We have other cats, so we have several trays hidden behind doors, at the end of wardrobes, behind cupboards sort of thing, to give them privacy. He likes to sit on our 6 foot high fence or in the oak tree next to the house. We don't get scraps between our cats either, they live happily alongside one another.

At the start of all this he came in like a bat out of hell, he was that traumatised that he was unresponsive, we rushed him to the vet then so it could very well still be that initial trauma. That was two weeks ago. I don't know if he had a fight with an entire male cat (there are a lot of elderly people living around here with pet cats) or perhaps an unfriendly dog (he's used to our dogs and they live happily alongside one another). Maybe even one of the local kids being nasty (they're known to kick animals).

Could this really all stem from one initial shock two weeks ago? He did seem very shocked...

I am definitely considering that. The vet has said to hold off from relaxants like that though until he's gauged the effect of the antibiotics.

Zylkene calms them down too, you could look into that when the antibiotics have worked.

I have a 4 year old cat who was diagnosed with FLUTD.
Had one episode which needed catheterisation over 2 years ago and has never had it since, also possibly stress related.
he is on Cystaid and has a 95% canned food diet, just a very few dry for his teeth, about 10 a day. You need one litter tray per cat and one more, and he may not like the litter so do you acyually see him wee in any of the trays? If he dislikes the litter and holds it in, and feels he cannot pee outside due to another cat, this can cause cystitis.
