I have a 19 month male neutered basset hound. Up until recently we had another dog. I'm not in a position to take on another dog but am to take on a cat.

This wouldn't happen for a while as DD is only 10 weeks old and so I don't think it's a good idea for a few more months.

How easy is it to introduce a cat into a dog house? Growing up we had cats and dogs together, but the cats were there first and the dogs were introduced as puppies so grew up with the ultimate respect for the cats!

The dog does not chase cats, although he does chase birds. Would you suggest an older cat or a kitten? If a kitten has been raised with dogs does this mean that they know how to put dogs in their place? I'm thinking of a large cat such as a Norwegian forest cat.
