Cat gets snuggly and then bites my chin

Why does he do this? He's been doing ever since he was a kitten. He only ever does it when he's lying on me and getting lots of love and strokes. He slowly inches closer and closer to my face and neck, purring loudly with eyes closed. And then slowly he moves in for a bite on my chin or my cheek/face. I don't think he is being aggressive, I kind of get the impression that he is being very affectionate but it really really hurts.

Tonight I have picked him up from a 4 day stint (and his first visit) to the cattery. He was very pleased to be home and has followed me around meaowing constantly. He has wanted constant cuddles but has bitten me twice on the face.

Just wondering if there's a reason for this?

Mine does this so I'll lurk if that's OK! We've had her for years, every time she bites we put her down but she still does it.

Confused

Maybe a suckling type reflex?

Mine does it when he's enjoying the affection a bit too much, I think it's frustration. He has a blanket that he 'shags' and if I put that near him he'll jump off me onto it which stops him attacking me. My old cat had similar issues too.
