Our amazing cat has been knocked over and killed

Trying to pull myself together to get ds ready for bed but can't stop crying. We've only had him 4 months but he was such a laid back affectionate cat and perfect for our family. Ds is 5 and has autism, he calls the cat his "mate". No idea how I'm going to tell him.

Hardly got any sleep last night thinking about how I'm going to tell ds. He's awake now but we've got his OT coming round this morning so I think it's best to wait till after she's left.

We had two cats before he was born & he's seen photos & knows their names. I'm thinking I'm going to tell him that our cat has gone to live with them. I really don't think he'll "get" the concept of death & I don't want him to be scared that when me or his Dad go out we might not come back iyswim.

I love cats & love having them in the house but don't think at the moment I could put ds through this again. I don't know, have to see how I feel as time goes on.

I'm so so sorry. I lost a beautiful tabby 2 yo that way when I was a child. Think it was the only time I've ever seen my dad cry.

So sorry you have to tell DS.

Sad agree with story. My friend's cat was killed prob by a fox. He got 2 rescue cats from RSPCA; all doing well now

I told Ds. He was upset at first, it was heartbreaking to see him go out into the garden & call for his cat. He had a little cry & said he wanted to give his cat one last stroke & say goodbye. I did wonder if I'd done the right thing in telling the RSPCA to take him away (it was them who came round & told us) but I dont know how our cat would have looked & maybe it would have upset Ds more. He's watching tv now & seems fine, but every now and again will say he wants to see our cat. I think feeding time & mornings are going to be the hardest for all of us.

Thanks again for all your support. I can't talk about it without crying at the moment (the pet insurance call is going to be tough) so its been a real help to be able to come on here. I'll think on about another cat & see how we all feel after a bit of time.

I blubbed down the phone to the Pet Insurance when we lost our little cat Babe. They were lovely though.

I said no more cats. We lost little cat on 29th Jan 2010 and I took possession of Sparkling cat on 14th Feb, and she's still here. Smile
