Does anyone have a cassette recorder/dictaphone gathering dust?

Helllllp! Before I went on holiday I promised my ancient-ish cassette recorder to my local cat rescue shelter to help them reunite mother cats with their kittens. While I was away, DH did a 'spot' of DIY and despite me turning the house upside down, the cassette recorder is nowhere to be found. I suspect he binned it, although he denies all knowledge and 'saw it somewhere' Angry

So, the local cat rescue still needs a cassette recorder/player or dictaphone. Do any nice mumsnetters have one lying around gathering dust that they would be willing to donate? I'd happily pay postage.

Fingers crossed!

how do this work?

I think i may have a dictaphone somewhere, but have to admit i'm completely intrigued as to how it might be used (if i can actually find it!)

I asked that question too! A very nice man explained to me that they often get calls around this time of year from people who have just found a cat with newborn kittens in their garden/shed/garage. They go to collect the cat and kittens but the mum cat runs off in fright, leaving the kittens. They take the kittens away to look after them but then there's the problem of how to get the mother cat. The only thing that will lure her back is to hear her kittens crying so at the moment they're having to take a kitten back to the garden it was found in and sit there in the pouring rain until the mum cat reappears. Apart from the pouring rain, the problem is that the kitten is now warm and fed and cosy so doesn't cry = no mum cat. So the idea is to record the kittens crying when they're first picked up and then the kittens can stay in the warm and dry shelter and get fed while the rescuer goes back to the garden with the cassette player and plays the recording until the mum cat reappears.

I shall have a good hunt and see if i can find mine anywhere. might take a few days, but i'll come back to you as soon as I can.

Thankyou MysteryCat!

DH is currently in the garage looking for my one. It's been 3 weeks since it disappeared though so I'm not holding out too much hope.

well, i have a date on thursday with about 3 boxes that still haven't been unpacked since i moved house last year, and they are just the kind of place one of my old dictaphones would hide! so, i'll keep you posted.

That is a brilliant idea op.

Most iPhones or similar have dictaphones in them. If you switch it to airplane mode it wont ring out halfway through a recording.

I have a spare Dictaphone PM the address to me.
