Cat peeing outside litter tray

I have two indoor cats, have had them for six years now.

In the past couple of weeks, on of then has taken to peeing outside of all the litter trays (we have four large ones around the house). He's never done it before, he does it right beside all of them. Nowhere else, just right beside them.

I took him to the vet last week to see if he had an infection (he did it once years ago when he had cystitis) but he was given the all clear.

Litter trays are emptied of feceas as soon I see they have been and are totally cleaned out very regulary.

We moved to this rented property about a year ago and LL doesnt k ow we have cats. I don't know what to do, but it's starting to smell.

How distressing for you.

I take it he's been neutered? Has there been any change to the household routine lately? Does he get on well with the other cat? Does he still poo in the litter tray? Is there any way an outside cat can get in without you knowing?

Do your litter trays have covers?

And - do you ever see him do it?

Yes neutered, both cats get on fine they were litter mates so have been together all thier lives. No change to routine. He still poos in the tray and yes, I've seen him wee many times now! Clapped my hands, moved him into the tray. Both things vet suggested.

Litter trays dot have covers. Have tried in the past but they will not go into covered trays. No Other cats can access the flat.

We had such trouble finding a place to live, I'm scared we will lose our deposit.

Martha I'm so sorry I really don't know what to suggest! Good luck.

It's okay - no one does. Been out all day and come back to the flat stinking. Have taken to putting down newspaper and old towels under and around the tray to try and protect the landlords carpet. I'm at the end of my tether.

Martha, with new kittens we used training mats for dogs around the litter trays, seemed to absorb the mess and smell a bit better than newspaper and the back is a bit more leakproof so should help protect carpets.
If he always pees in the same place, try usimg another litter tray over the spot? It might move the problem, but he might just accept it.

Totally off topic but we have a cat called Martha - we call her Marthamoo lol.
