My cat is missing

So sad. My lovely cat is missing and hasn't been seen for three days. He is microchipped. I have put leaflets through all doors in vicinity, will be contacting local vets today and also the local council cleansing department in case the worst has happened.

Is there anything else I should be doing? I feel awful- tearful and keep imagining him hurt, shut in, in pain somewhere.

Dp is sympathetic but not really a cat person. Just wanted to share with like-minded people and if anyone has any tips or ideas then would be grateful.

Thanks.

I've had them missing for 5-14 days and then they turned up - its awful! One pair went together and turned up in someone's spare room under a bed - so the leaflet thing is worth doing. My youngest has taken to going off now and he's a tree climbing adventurer, I've had to throw him out of the car more than once Shock so I really do know the feeling. Let the microchip company know as well, so that if he's taken to a vet he will show up instantly as missing. Yes we had one that a (distant) neighbour thought was a stray and took her to the vet.... In all my years of cat owning (no of cats in double figures) I've had lots go missing but none disappear completely. I think the chances are he will come back and will be fine.

Breathe :)

Thank you- it's good to hear of success stories! They are such a worry. In my note, I asked that people check all outbuildings and also not to feed if he is visiting as he is pretty friendly. We actually did have a cat that went missing completely 5 years ago- have never heard a thing since. But I just hope that is rare as I can't bear the thought of going through not knowing again.

also contact local rescues and the rspca all of them usually have a missing cat register get him on those and if someone contacts them about a cat that has turned up they can sometimes put the two together and reunite

I really feel for you. My ginger tom went missing a couple of years ago and we finally found him stuck in a discarded pipe in someone's garden (they'd obviously ignored my leaflet). Throughout the three days he was gone, I continued to go into the garden and call his name every couple of hours and finally on day 3 (about 3am) I heard him mewing. I knocked on four different houses (after 8am!) and went in their gardens before I tracked him down.

It's that time of year when people are on holiday so if your cat is stuck in a shed, he could be trapped for a few days. I completely sympathise - I was in tears almost the whole time.

Keeping everything crossed for his safe return :)

is this totally out of character for him? i mean - is he a 'home' cat who stays in every night or is he an explorer type who loves being outside? i'm just trying to gauge the likelihood of him going roaming for 3 days. has he been neutered?

i'm so sorry. it's so worrying for you.

Thanks for the replies. Have phoned round all vets in the area today and also had a call from a lovely man from the council who said they have not picked anything up from the road in our area. Have also been out and about calling in the area too. Posters put up in a couple of key places. In answer to your question gingerpig, He is a bit of a mixture really loves a cuddle and a warm lap but also enjoys the outdoors. Lots of fields where we are so maybe he is hunting...
Thanks for the advice all. I am having to work too, and trying not to burst into tears on a regular basis...

We've got lots of cats around us and fields etc. At the moment we have 4 adults and 2 kittens. Sometimes we don't see them for 2 or 3 days. A while back when it was very very rainy we didn't see any of them for about a week or so, even then it was only 1 that came back to start with.
Is your cat done? I only ask as the female cats around here are in season and being chased by males.

minesacoffee · 18/06/2012 20:56

Yes he is neutered so probably not chasing the ladies! Good to hear of cats who have come home.

He's found a mouse hole and is up to his shoulders in mud happily picking the babies off one by one.

Keep walking around calling him and rattling his biscuit box, check down the side of the garages if you can or under any debris in case he's under there hiding.

Mine came home on day 4, having ignored me shouting for him, etc and not sighted by anyone else. Hope he comes home soon.
