Cat and kitten fighting over litter tray

We brought home a new kitten on Sunday, all seems to be going well except our 2yo boy cat keeps trying to attack the kitten when she is using the litter tray!

If you have more than more cat do they generally share a litter tray or have seperate ones? We have two litter trays but he seems determind to go in the one she has been using?

Any ideas how I can stop them fighting? I have been trying to chase him away while she is using the litter tray but obviously Im not always going to be there. I dont want her to be put off using the litter tray she is doing so well with it so far!

There are lots of other posters who know far more than me but can you not keep them apart for a few days then introduce them gradually whilst you are there (and separate if you have to go out)?

I understood new introductions should be done gradually so both cat and kitten have time to adapt (and kitten can settle in without fear of cat).....

I think you need a tray per cat plus one extra, so you need three trays in different places.

They'll need time to get to know each other - your boy might be feeling a bit invaded. Can you keep the kitten to one room for a while and slowly introduce them? Put a t-shirt or something in with the kitten and then leave it near the cat, so they get used to the smell.

Chasing away isn't a good idea as they'll just get hyped up.

Thanks for the advice, they seem to be getting on ok apart from the litter tray thing. They are being kept apart during the day while we are at work so its only in the evenings that we are having issues.

I have heard that you need a little tray each plus an extra but I wasnt sure if that would be overkill, might have to go and buy an extra one then!

I have 3 cats and one whopper of a litter tray from pets at home. My 2 boys used to do this when I got my youngest. But now they both squeeze into and use the litter tray together Hmm

You could get a kitten tray for her for a while?
