I read this today and shed a tear for Sophie and her owner :-( The video montage is so touching... they obviously had a lovely bond.

It is sad, but, brace yourself for some hard as nails comments.
IMO, it was a complete over reaction. I've been very upset by the death of one of my cats and a dog. I never contemplated killing myself.
Secondly, he could have adopted another one (or two or three) and given them good lives.
Cat people are a breed unto themselves though.

I think it's apparent he was a very lonely man. Maybe he had mental health problems? The cat may have been his only friend.

Anyway, it's not my place to judge; I just think it's very sad that he felt so down he had to do this...

PS rips there are hundreds of comments below the article; I was very surprised to see that the vast majority are empathetic and heartfelt.

how sad i miss all of my cats and dogs who have gone and after my marraige broke down recently i can honestly say that if it hadnt been for the cats i have i could have gone the same route so can understand his reaction, but how sad that he couldnt live without her RIP

Very very sad. Pets are some peoples only companion and saying 'never mind you can get another" to them would be like saying the same to someone who has lost a human partner.

Sorry if I offended people. I've a knack of doing that.

crazynanna · 09/05/2012 14:12

Do you know...I was never an animal 'lover'. I respected animals at a distance...got angry at cruelty, all of that...but never wanted a "smelly pet" putting hairs everywhere, etc, etc.

.....Until I got my kitten Smile

I am constantly amazed at the sheer love and protecviness I feel for her...almost like one of my children. I think silly things like her getting lost and being alone...and I actually cry!! Blush

Animals' I think bring out the best in people.

rips you didn't offend me :)

crazynanna - I am with you on that. Got my cat (first ever pet - was same as you, respected animals from a distance) approx six months ago and it's definitely unlocked something in me. I am totally smitten with my nervous, grumpy, but very loving old lady :)

Ah Rips, you didnt offend anyone. It can be hard to understand how deep some people feel about their pets. Ive posted under another nn about my beloved cat who died a couple of years ago at the grand age of 23, we got her when I was about 6, I remember the day as if it was yesterday. I was bullied terribly as a child, really very badly, and that cat was my only friend for about 5 years. if anything had happened to her (the bullies did once tie a rocket to her leg but a neighbour saw them and stopped them before they lit it, fuckers) during that dark period in my life I'd have been more than heartbroken so i can understand people who do things like this.

Blush my cat and best friend died earlier this year and it shook me so much I ended up on antidepressants, guaranteed that was on top of a family argument and family death.

I'd only had her for 6months. I got her after nursing a family member through cancer, 3 months after that she was diagnosed cancer and I admit to totally spoiling her rotten and getting waay to close. Miss her terribly but I would do it all again and hope to take on older rescue animals

Feel for that poor man though, it is so sad
