FABCat is bored, apparently.

As some of you will know she has been biting and tearing any paper she can find for a looooooong time now. Vet has no clue why she is doing it. So far she hasn't ripped up anything valuable though she has had some recipes, etc that I have torn out of a magazine, DH's indemnity form and DS1's maths homework.

Does anyone have any actual experience of this and why a cat will do this?

she probably likes it!

My first cat would make a beeline for scrunchy bits of paper and steal them. He really wanted them to be scrumpled up into a ball so he could play fetch

He would retrieve, sit and drop the paper ball into my hand! :D

stinkyfluffycat · 02/05/2012 20:53

No teacher is going to believe 'Miss, the cat ate my homework', are they?
Grin
Hamsters do this to make nests, but I've no idea why a cat would do it.
Get her some new toys and try and play with her more?

JustFab · 02/05/2012 20:59

She has always liked flicking through paper - she is 17 - but she has never done this until she got ill.

I planned to write in DD's homework book that the cat had eaten her homework but she wouldn't let me.

She has a cupboard full of toys but only ever wants to cry and carry her caterpillar around.

Make paper aeroplanes for her to chase? Or just give her a Yellow Pages?
One of mine mostly plays with hair bobbles...

tabulahrasa · 03/05/2012 02:18

One of mine is blooming obsessed with hair bobbles, to the point where she will sit and watch for you taking them off so she can steal them...she also has a major thing for Sellotape and those plastic mailbags that Internet shopping is often delivered in, I've tried to return things before and couldn't because the bag is covered in hundreds of tiny puncture marks where she's methodically chewed the whole thing.

The other one has a compulsion to hide in visitors handbags and any cardboard box, even if it's actually too small for get to fit in.

TBH if one of them started chewing paper I don't think I'd think it was anything more than random cat behaviour, lol

JustFab · 03/05/2012 07:43

The aeroplanes sound fun but I am not allowed to have her run as her arthritis is really bad.

I have just seen her sat on the telly pages surrounded by torn paper looking really happy Grin.

The Argos catalogue.....

Our old cat is obsessed with the plastic security rings on milk containers. She waits for the ring to be flicked onto the floor and chases it madly round, she then skillfully and rather bravely kills the ring - my cue to pick up dead ring, praise her and give red plastic ring funeral! She may be a daft old cat - but no one can kill a milk ring like she does! :o

i used to have one cat who could not be left home alone with access to toilet roll he could shred it into a million pieces cue one wrecked room, and the half siamese thug likes to shred paper so its probably just shes into paper at the moment

MissTapestry · 03/05/2012 12:48

Ours is absolutely lethal to any passing bit of dried spaghetti! Grin

Northernlurker · 03/05/2012 12:50

Ours likes to do a bit of shredding too and she LOVES to sit in a box and gnaw at the sides. No idea why.....

JustFab · 03/05/2012 12:52

I am gutted to think she is just a normal cat Shock I thought she was special and uniqe Sad.

I had forgotten she would always destroy a loo or kitchen roll if it was left around but not while on the loo roll holder.

She has definitely had fun this morning and is now sleeping Grin.

One of mine likes carrying things in his mouth. He especially likes rolled up foil but will tolerate a piece of paper at a push.
He looked like Popeye recently. DD had some sort of L shaped bit of plastic shite. Terry decided it was his and proudly strutted with his pipe.

JustFab · 03/05/2012 14:31

Mine is terrified of foil and will run away when she hears the sound of it coming out of the box. Mine is funny when she is sat with paper hanging out of her mouth and she doesn't realise Grin.

Oh come to think of it, boxcat does a demented andrex puppy impression, I'd forgotten because I'm so used to keeping her out of the way of toilet roll

after getting up to a trail of confetti all the way through my hall and down the stairs a few times I'm very vigilant about shutting doors, lol

Catsmamma · 03/05/2012 17:35

Faerie runs away if I pull out the tin foil! They are all crazy!

tb · 04/05/2012 10:14

Our cat used to love a small ball of foil, and would chase it, bat it round, and then bring it back proudly and drop it so that you could throw it again. We think that she 'thinks' she's a dog.

MNP · 04/05/2012 20:26

Greekcat is murder to paper and bubble wrap.

liveinazoo · 04/05/2012 20:31
