newbie needs help with litter tray "whiffs"!

as you may know i have acquired 2 9month old rescue cats
they arer confined to the kitchen at the moment to consolidate litter tray skills,as advised>
i was told one tray is fine.am using catsan in it.emptied poo yesterday am,and again before bed
when i went out there this morning my kitchen stank,although they are using the trayso bad i nearly retched!

ive emptied,wiped out and refilled fresh litter but still my kitchen smells like a giant cat lav!

HELP!!!!!!

how do you manage the unsavoury sides of keeping cats?

Hi zoo, I'm afraid I'm not going to be much use here.

Hopefully someone will come along with some more helpful suggestions.

I just think you have to try and keep on top of emptying out the soiled litter and their mess. You will probably find you will get through quite a bit of cat litter though (having 2 cats).

Do you empty it into the kitchen bin? If so you have to try and empty that more often or put something perfumed like talc in the bin? --haven't tried the talc thing myself--

I would try changing their food for a week
I have a six month old kitten and a 15yr cat, we had the same problem the other week and we found out it was the food!
Normally they have felix or whiskas pouches but the other week we didn't have time to go shopping so nipped in the local Lidl and I bought their catfood pouches.
The cats poo smelt horrendous, making us both gag!! the smell permiated the whole house!!
Back to whiskas pouches this week and no smell.
The cats have their litter tray and food in my sewing room away from the dogs, I clean it all every day and have the window open all the time on the first notch and honestly no nasy niffs.

Try using Wood Pellet cat litter- Tesco do it, and Co op. We use that and there's no smell whatsoever from our Cats Tray, he also eats Whiskers (anything else makes him poorly) and Go Cat biscuits.

We have had the same problem with our house rabbit, she's trained to go in a litter tray but the smell gets immense.

If you spray it into the litter tray once it has been cleaned it continuously kills bacteria and therefore helps stop the smell.

Definitely experiment with the food. Whiskas makes my cat's poo hum!

I use catsan and scented litter tray liners from Wilko. I scoop her poo's out immediately - tie up in a nappy bag - and deposit in outdoor bin. I also empty full litter tray out about once every couple of days - tie up in a carrier - and again, straight to outdoor bin. I use odor neutraliser air freshener too and make sure the windows are open regularly :-)

Once you're used to it you'll not notice anymore, haha.

they have dry food so will try different brands to see can find a "low emissions" compromise

poo and litter go straight into outside bin.may invest in a plug iin freshner while work on them.i could smell kitty litter when i walked in the front door

Try Cat's Best OkoPlus Clumping Litter. It seems expensive but you can remove any waste products daily and really only need to change the entire litter tray about every 2-3 weeks. It does not retain any smells and I have that from someone who has a nose like a blood hound, so much so that she now uses it for her cats :)

Our kitten's poo smelt horrendous! Truly vile. We had to use a cat food with no grains, I think it was Applause? Anyway, two days later and the smell had gone. After the kitten was a year old, we slowly reintroduced cheap other food with no problem.

Apparently some kittens don't have the ability to digest grains, they get more tolerant as they get older.

A covered litter tray and waste removed every time they use it.

Covered tray does help I think. Otherwise just hope you have normal cats who will crap outdoors unlike my stupid one

seriously switch to the wood pellets one asda does it aswell, i have four cats and the litter smells of wood, i cant stand the smell of the clay besed ones and the wood one breaks down to sawdust so easy to clean, and cats dont tolerate cereal in food if they are on dry try purely range from pets at home low cereal one and my cats like it is about £7 for a 5kg bag so nowt that expensive as you use less

Another vote for Cat's Best OkoPlus Clumping Litter. Also I found that my cat processed Whiskas pouches into the most evil smelling (and slightly squidgy) poos imaginable. I find that wet food with higher meat content (and therefore less cereal) such as Sheba Desire, or Royal Canin Sensible 33 dried food really helps the situation. Unfortunately these are the more expensive brands, but they're sometimes on offer in places like Pets at Home. Daft mog never took to using the great outdoors, but rushes indoors from the garden to use the litter tray instead.

try sprinkling some bicarb in with the litter, its a deoderiser so helps with the smells, changing their food is ok, but be warned it could give them the shits if you suddenly change them over, slowly introduce new food mixed in with what they have now..hth
