How do you toddlerproof a litter tray?

Up until now we've been able to stop ds (13mo) getting to the corner of the kitchen where the tray (a big, covered contraption) is, but no more! What do you do at your home?

Only keep the litter tray in the house when you are out or at night - then the toddler won't need to be anywhere near it.

Oops, forgot to add the cats don't go out! if they did scurryfunge's suggestion would be the obvious solution.

Ah, ok. Can you screen off the area with some sort of barrier? Or just move it when you are in the kitchen.

is your bathroom big enough to put the litter tray in with maybe a stairgate across the door so you can step over the gate and littly cant get past it ,

The bathroom is already the changing station too so no space there . For now we've put a beer-brewing barrel full of water which he has not been able to push to get past...let's see how long this lasts. Can't put a gate as the corner is at a weird angle and between work counters...complicated.
