cats and extension

We're planning a moderate extension to our house over the summer. It should only take a few weeks - it's single storey - but I'm not sure what effect it will have on the cats. Whilst they're building the extension I image they will be fine, if a little annoyed/freaked by the noise but I'm njot sure what happens when they knock through or do the internal work - utilities, flooring, plastering, kitchen fitting etc.

has anybody got any experience of building around cats?

Would I be better off trying to persuade my dad to have them to stay for a few weeks?

We had to fish our chinchilla male out from under the floor boards most days but it was ok.

What if he gets lost at your dads? your dad would feel awful.

Old cat has been to stay with dad - both with us and on his own when we went away for a month. he adjusts to new surroundings incredibly quickly. Kitten has been to visit dad but was quite traumatized and we can't get her to go outside at all. You may be right though and it may be more responsibility than dad wants.

We're about to embark on a huge extension (rear and side of a semi detached house) which will cut off all normal access to and from the house for the cats. We will have to move out too, not sure after how long. I am thinking we'll have to put the cats in a cattery, as I don't see any other way round it.
Will your cats have safe access in and out of the house despite the extension? I believe the process of breaking through is really noisy and dusty, so it might be best to confine your cats to one room or have them go somewhere for that bit especially.
