had ours since november and was surprised to find that she smells. not really strong (most of the time, reasonably subtle) but smell shes does. it isn't poo/bottoms, just a smell, not very nice tbh but bearable, just wondered as i have never come across a cat that smells before. she has long hair, possibly this contributes to it. no idea if i can do anything about it as i can't wash her or spray perfume on her (obviously). cat that used to come in always smelt of his owner who must wear perfume, i don't, our house is a perfume house due to dd having eczema & me being tomboyish' :D

newsflash, cats do smell.

blighter · 01/04/2012 17:07

honestly, i really didn't know. i have never owned a cat before and tbh i have never come across a cat that did. i posted because i thought that perhaps there maybe something wrong and would need a vet visit...

I don't have cats, am very allergic, but all homes I have been in with cats have a distinct cat smell. even very clean homes. usually not strong but def there. if she's alert, eating, drinking, weeing, pooing I wouldn't worry.

TeddingtonsMarchingBand · 01/04/2012 17:13

I think I know a song about this.

wigglybeezer · 01/04/2012 17:13

You are lucky its a subtle smell. our long haired cat smells of old wee as she tends to get pee on her long hairy "trousers". I have been known to spray her rear end with water to get her to wash it thoroughly (you should see the look on her face when i do that!). The rest of her fur has a stronger smell than ourshort haired cat but it is quite a nice, smoky woolly smell.

blighter · 01/04/2012 17:14

really weird, i have never noticed a smell on them before nor in peoples homes. i am very allergic to them too however oddly enough i am not to her although have since come across info' saying that for an allergic the best cat to get is a female long hair which she is :)

My cat doesn't smell. I've never come across one that does really. If it has a noticeable smell I would be concerned that there is some kind of a health problem such as an ear infection or something not right.

Fluffycloudland77 · 01/04/2012 17:40

You can wash longhairs, growing up we had three White chinchillas and the male was always getting engine oil on him, if it got really bad we washed him.

It wasn't to bad tbh, I used Vidal Sassoon wash and go on him. You can get special cat shampoos obv.

Our Bengal smells like a fur coat! His mate the black cat sometimes sprays him and he smells of tom.

blighter · 01/04/2012 19:17

i can't imagine washing her, she would FREAK, the thought of lifting her into a bowl of water or the bath, she would run off. i think i'll call vet and have a word and see what they say. she has always had this smell, just assumed it was a smell she had. she has been to vets before, blood tests etc and all seems well but i think i will call anyway

Our 18 yr old cat has developed a smell recently-not very strong but kind of greasy and old-just put it down to age. Ages ago when he had an infected bite from a fight I put tcp on it and he smelt of that for about a year!

Our 6month kitten smells of nothing and I have a very very sensitive sense of smell.

Sparklingbrook · 01/04/2012 19:27

Sparkling Cat smells lovely. Honest.

I asked one of the DC's friends to confirm that our house didn't smell of cat (11 years old and v honest). He said it doesn't, but sometimes smells of cooking. Grin

spanky2 · 01/04/2012 19:29

Fluffy smells of dry grass. I like it. Your cat might have wind. I had to bathe my persian, she hated the hairdrier more.

Catsdontcare · 01/04/2012 19:29

My cats don't smell (their only redeeming feature Hmm)

Selks · 01/04/2012 19:36

Smell might come from bad teeth, also.

blighter · 01/04/2012 19:51

her teeth were recently checked. smell comes from her body. i just got dh to pick her up and have a good sniff. he couldn't smell anything, what a surprise, he said she just smells of fur....she does have a smell, perhaps it is just her, we all have a smell, dd has a smell :) so does dh.......it isn't wind (cat, not dh, actually, dh's might be wind). i may call vets but she seems fine in everyway so not too concerned, just a shame really. sometimes when she sits on my lap i tuck her into a blanket, like a baby, she likes it although sometimes i do it as she is a bit smelly..(it hides it)

I have just stuffed my nose into Sparkling Cat's fur (just to check again) and she smells lovely. She started purring. Grin

Maybe I smell of cat too and I don't know it. Shock

SootySweepandSue · 01/04/2012 19:56

Have you tried switching to a blander food?

blighter · 01/04/2012 21:00

sooty - she doesn't have anythign fancy. she was having a wet pouch and dried but didn't seem to eat the wet, just licked the jelly off so stopped, she seems more than happy with dried atm, i use a good one although from memory cannot remember which. we don't give her imbetween fancy things although she sometimes has the odd bit of dried chicken, or a bit of plain fish (usually tuna, her favourite) but generally dried. sometimes it is stronger than other times. she grooms herself often enough so she doesn't seem to neglect her cleanliness either. could just be a cat smell that only some have..

nat - good to read i am not the only one with a stinker! ours is a rescue too. really frustrating at times not knowing about them. ours does groom herself well and use the litter tray. odd things cats, interesting to watch. NO IDEA what is going on in their heads. i like to watch them with other cats, they come into their own, weird world the cat world, the way they are with each other, makes it worth putting up with (her) stench :)
