Said goodbye to my cat this morning:(

I knew he was on his way out. He was on medication for thyroid problems and just stopped eating.

He was so thin and over the weekend seemed really lethargic and unhappy. I was avoiding taking to the vet at the end of the week hoping things would improve, but last night he looked at me, and I just knew he was dying.

Took him first thing this morning. Vet said he could put him on a drip but the prognosis was not good. He was anaemic, jaundiced and dehydrated. The vet said he thought kidneys and pancreas were failing. So difficult to make that call but I didnt want him to suffer and he was fading fast.

RIP furrball.

i have been in the same position as you this afternoon had to say goodbye to my 12 year old her kidneys had failed completely so a big hug from me to you.

fabwoman · 05/03/2012 17:56

So sorry about your cat Sad.

I am sure you have some lovely memories.

Snowsister · 05/03/2012 19:57

Thank you.

Im very sorry to hear youre in the same boat issey6cats. Sending you hugs back.

Mine was a rescue cat in 1998, we think he was two then so he was a good age. Lots has happened in life since then but he was a constant. I'm lucky I had him and I will miss him hugely.

Sorry to hear about your losses, snowsister and issey.

I had to allow the vet to put my Peg to sleep last Wednesday due to her kidney failure. We are now catless for the first time since 2001, and the house is emptier.

Snowsister · 06/03/2012 16:48

Unimaginativedad I know exactly what you mean about the house feeling empty.

I haven't been able to put his tray and bowls away yet. There's a big gap where he was in the house. I keep expecting to see him. It's so sad but it was the kindest thing have to keep reminding myself.

So sorry, you know you've done the right thing, but it's so hard.

fabwoman · 06/03/2012 17:27

So many losses Sad.

This will be me soon as FABCat was diagnosed with kidney failure in April 2011.

Prolesworth · 06/03/2012 17:29

So sorry to hear this :(

You did the right thing by him.

bibbityisaporker · 06/03/2012 17:29

Aww, thoughts are with all of you and the cat-shaped holes in your lives Sad.

LilRedWG · 06/03/2012 17:31

So sorry all. :-(

Snowsister · 06/03/2012 19:06

Cat shaped hole describes it perfectly :(

Apart from missing him its hard coming to terms that the decision to pts was mine. I keep thinking what if he had had treatment that worked. Sigh.

Keep reminding myself that the vet made it clear he had v poor chance of recovery.
Sorry to hear about fabcat.

So sorry to hear about your lovely cat :(

I know exactly how you feel and how much it hurts. It was the right thing to do but I know it doesn't make it any easier.

Soon you'll be able to remember the good times with a smile in your face.

pinkyredrose · 07/03/2012 07:57

On your face that should've said.

I've lost three cats myself and I still think about them all the time. It still hurts but it does get easier I promise you.

Snowsister · 08/03/2012 13:33

Thanks pink.

Ive started to remember what he was like in his prime, a king amongst cats! Have also realised how ill he has been. Think I was in denial about it all and had convinced myself he would return to his big fat happy self. Told myself he wasnt that old etc..

He was a fantastic wee fella and Im cheering myself up by remembering all the fun we had.

Thanks for all your replies, its helping me a lot to know others know how Im feeling.
