title says it all. I have brought a cat home as it seemed to be lost, was following me for quite some time despite numerous attempts to shoo it away...I'll leaflet the local area, see if it is chipped tomorrow but in the meantime is there anything I can do to make sure it doesn't pee and poo everywhere overnight? Makeshift litter tray? Lots of newspaper? Also if I go out tomorrow do I leave it in the house?
I offered it some food and although it ate a little it wasn't half starved. Any tips very gratefully received.

Really? I'll happily take it back to where it started following me. I didn't think it was normal for a cat to stray so far from home and i was not happy to leave it by the main road. It was running up each garden path we walked past and then running back and following me. Just seemed like it was lost.

I would put it back outside, but leave it a carboard box on it's side for it, and maybe a blanket and some food. That way, if it can go home, it will. And if not, it ought to be fine outside for a night and you can decide what to do with it in the morning.

Is that ok in the rain? We're just back where I found it andam knocking on a few doors. Still happily following me!

I found a cat once, in the middle of having kittens (in lashing rain) and the RSPCA who I rang in a panic told me to give it a carboard box on its side in the garden. Put the box under a bush to try and protect it a bit.

Where is Pinot when you need her?

I would keep it inside to be honest, and put leaflets up tomorrow, but then I am soft.

In bed now. I showed it the box and left it outside. Held the door open for a bit but it didn't come in. It was sat on the doormat when I came up. Damn thing followed me all the way back home again it was like walking a dog! Hope I've done the right thing.

If it is there in the morning, then you can take it to be checked for a microchip. If it is not, then it most probably has taken itself home, laughing all the way about the worry and upset it has caused.
Or at least my cat would!

It's gone. I hope it found its way home or another safe place.

Very often it is a cat that lives nearby whose owners are out at that moment. One cat locally spent three mornings last week at three different vets having been brought in as a stray when in fact he is just lonely whilst his owners are out at work. Not to mention the cat that spends all day in the local pet shop whilst his owners are at work!

Awww, poor little thing. I hope he's OK. You're very lovely to care, OP :)
