Kitten to be neutered next week - what to expect

Kitten novice here.
He was a rescue kitten and we agreed to have him neutered. He is five months now and booked in at the vet next week. Vet says nothing to eat or drink after 9pm -whoa that's going to be difficult!
Any tips please?

and as of this morning you wouldn't know he'd even been to the Vet.

My kitten was neutered last month. These days, after the operation, vets can administer a drug which will reverse the effect of the anaesthetic. This means the recovery period is shorter and the kitten's back legs don't keep collapsing while the effect wears off. Vet advised me to keep him in overnight but before I could lock the cat flap, kitten shot out into the garden in his usual fashion and was his usual lively self.

Our precious hand reared kitty had his bits removed at 6 months and was absolutely fine - I was expecting him to be woozy and confused but he licked his wound, ate his tea and was off and racing about the house about 1 hour after getting back from the vet. We had no problems at all with anything, and you would never have known he'd had any surgery!
