Should I give up hope??

Hi all, we have two lovely 7 year old male cats and moved house about 5 weeks ago. We kept them in for about 10 days then slowly started letting them out, there is no cat flap here so they go out and I let them back in the door. This has been going fine for a few weeks but one of the cats went out early Thursday morning (29th) and hasnt been seen since. I am really worried, have informed the local vet and our old one, rang the microchip people although I have to ring again tomorrow as it was the out of hours service today. We have been round the neighbourhood on the lookout and calling for him and put flyers through doors asking people to check sheds and garages etc. There were times in our old house where we might not see him for 2 or 3 days at a time but this was generally in the summer and we had a catflap so we knew he could get in over night or when we were out for food etc.

I am so devastated at the thought that something terrible has happened to him and I keep imagining him trapped somewhere.

Is it likely he could have got lost? Hes been coming and going for over two weeks with no problems so this seems unlikely. I've still been letting the other cat out in the hope he might even track him down.

I don't know what else to do.

Does anyone have any stories like this with a happy ending? or should I just accept that he's gone?

Don't give up hope I have known a cat return home after being away for 4 years. Do get your neighbours to open their sheds and garages as they may have accidently shut him in.
