I have both dogs and cats.
Every novice pet owner thinks they like cats who are a bit like dogs. Actually what they mean is they want an engaging, friendly, intelligent, people orientated, problem free cat. ( who they don't have to take out for walks in all weathers)
And many cats are believed to be a little bit special by their besotted owners (including one of mine, DC1, who I fondly imagine to have 'a bit of burmese' in her - she may, she may not! I love her just the same.)
I would shy away from supporting any fancy 'barbie' breed directly. There can be inherited health and behavioural issues, which a small gene pool only increases, however careful the breeder. Large amounts of money change hands - though all breeders will tell you that they are not in it for the money. This may well be true most of the time, but not all of the time.
On the other hand, there are many, many cats who are homeless and abandoned at all time of the year.
I do hope you are not thinking in terms of giving the animal as a christmas present by the way. That would be a very poor introduction to responsible pet ownership. I will say no more.
Go instead, well into the New Year, to your local rescue centre such as Cats Protection - who will know the purrsonalities of all their charges and be able to match your family up to the purrfect cat.
Oh - and about that little bit of something special ? DC 2 is definitely all mog and he is the naughtiest, funniest, liveliest, most intelligent person-fixated lovebug of a feline you could wish to meet.
And that is all I have to say on the matter
