Introducing a new kitten to a grumpy old cat!

We have an eight year-old British Shorthair male. He's huge and mainly spends his time catching rabbits and beating up the neighbours' cats!

We also looked after our parents in laws' cat a couple of years ago for a few days. She was old and frail and deaf. He was very aggressive towards her and we ended up keeping them separate because it was just for a few days and we didn't think they'd get used to each other.

Now, I'd quite fancy getting another kitten (or two) but wondered whether it's a non-starter. Is he likely to be aggressive towards a kitten? (He's not aggressive to us or the children, by the way, with us, he's, well, a pussy cat!)

Obviously I don't want to get a kitten if it's going to end up getting mauled. Is there any way of introducing a kitten to an older cat so that it is not perceived as a threat. Would getting an older cat be a better idea?

I'd kind of like to know whether this is at all feasible before even thinking about another cat!
