So excited - been to see a kitten today

And me and the dds have fallen in love!

We went yesterday to someone's home who fosters cats from this particular rescue centre until they're homed. We went to see a particular cat but when we got there this cat stayed in the cupboard the whole time and seemed very nervous.

Today we went to see another kitten from the same rescue centre that's currently being looked after at a cattery with 3 other kittens. White with a bit of ginger - totally gorgeous. We had a good play with her and the other kittens. She's about 6 months old and litter-trained. When we were ready to leave she sat there watching us as if she wanted to come with us!

Even dh who wasn't keen on the whole idea has softened a bit. So now we have a decision to make, it's a bit scary as we've never had a cat before so are complete novices!

Has anyone got any tips/advice for new cat owners? I'm a bit confused about the type of litter - the woman yesterday recommended the clay sort and today they said the wood sort.

We have the 'Aldi' sort , and found it fine. We have always had older cats so no experience of kittens. Good luck!

Pets at home do a pine chip cat litter that we use, does a reasonable job of disguising smells!

Don't buy metal bowls. Our tom cat freaks when he sees another cat looking back at him and will only drink out of clay/plastic. Maybe it's just him.

Find out what food she's on and keep her on it or mixed feed if you want. Changing food abruptly makes my cats sick.

The best litter I've ever found is Catsan Clumping litter (this kind. It's more expensive than other types but it lasts ages and it's so easy to clean out as everything wet sticks together and comes out in lumps. Morrisons sell it I know.

I have had cats most of my life and have a 6month old tabby just now. She's very cute and very playful but nibbles everything and climbs curtains! Loads of fun and DCs love her.

I adopted two kittens from cats protection as they advised one is often too naughty on its own. Two play with each other and scratch each other (playing) rather than your furniture. It's nice for them to have a companion as well. Would you stretch to two? My two are a mini tabby and a hulking black fluffball.

Wood litter here. Have used it all! It smells a lot less than others, is cheap, environmentally friendly. Poos easy scooped out. Wet litter turns to dust and can be 'sieved' out with the poop scoop into a bag if you don't want to change all the litter.

What I'd do though, is go with the same litter the shelter are using, at least for the first week or two. Too many changes at one time can throw them.
