How can I get a kitten?

I've finally persuaded DH that it wouldn't be the end of life as we know it if we got a kitten (we have no other pets). However now I've started contacting rescue centres they seem to only home in pairs which is not going to go down well with DH. How to do get a single kitty? Should I buy one on Gumtree?

No. Rescues prefer to home kittens in pairs as it makes your life easier because they entertain each other. Have you considered an adult cat? If you get a cat over 18 months they will have developed their personality so you can be assured of temperament. If you are set on a kitten I'm sure there are plenty of rescues who will rehome single kittens. Have you looked on Catchat. Good luck.

Have to say having had in the past an adult cat and 2 kittens from rescue, if your dh is reluctant, your better option may be the adult cat.

The adult cat was very calm, independent, but loving and affectionate.

Kittens although still loving and fun are very boisterous and energetic and they do wreck things, like my stair carpet is ruined and they require lots of attention and get bored easily.

Im not saying dont get kittens, just be prepared, kittens are very much like puppies.

Thanks for your answers. Have had kittens/cats in the past (just not with DH) so am prepared for kittenish behaviour. Will kepp on trying the rescue centres.

Kiki, if you are north London by any chance, a friend of mine has 3 gorgeous kittens - they were brought to her by a stray cat shortly after she gave birth and my friend took mum and kitties in. They are very well socialised and would make fab pets. You are probably nowhere near us but thought I'd mention it.

Kiki, we adopted 2 kittens 5 weeks ago from our local cats protection www.cats.org.uk. They had an open day and had around twenty kittens who needed homing. We could have just taken one if we wanted but we took pity on two sisters who seemed to be overlooked as they were a little older (14 wks). They had already had there injections and were litter trained, they also give free micro chipping. Five weeks later and they have settled in great! They are a hand full at times but the kids just love them. Do try the cats protection as they usually have loads of cats needing new homes. The adoption fee is £55 per cat. Hth

We got our 5 month old kitties from Cats Protection. They are gorgeous cats and as whorules says, litter trained, injections up to date etc. Also neutered as they are a bit older. We could also have just taken one (as intended!) but couldn't leave one of the sisters behind. My local CP branch is inundated with kittens/cats needing good homes.

check Blue Cross website - they say whether they need to be pairs or not.

Our cat was about 9 months when we got her last year from Cats Protection. Still great fun but a bit more independant than a kitten.
