why do my cats lick me?

Does it mean they are lacking in something in their diet perhaps? Or are they just being kind and keeping me clean?

My cat licks me - but very, very delicately on the cheeks and the nose to wake me up in the morning. Not rasping at all - I think it's genuine affection and it's very, very sweet!
