She has often read them and pawed at them but never eaten them before .

She could be looking for a grass replacement. Ours used to eat plastic bags before I started growing grass for them to eat instead.

No, she can come and go as she wants and has 2 big lawns to snack on.

Is yours a playful cat, maybe she wants to play with you. We used to slide toy mice across the laminate floor (they go really fast!) for ours to chase. Then she would 'hide' behind a chair or something ready to leap out for the next mouse that came past. I find that mine requires more play indoors during really bad cold weather.
