How many litter trays?

when I married my dh I inherited his 4 Persians. They are all elderly, youngest 8, eldest 14 and have always been free to come and go as they please, and go to the loo outside.

We are going to be moving house soon. And I know the cats will need to stay in for a month. Anyone any ideas how to get them using litter trays? How many do I need? Should I spread them around the house, line them up? Should I get them used to them in the old house first?

They aren't particularly clean cats, I often come down in the morning to find wee on my kitchen counter tops... Any ideas how to stop this, will the trays help?
And one cat likes to 'mark' from time to time, she is the smallest, so i guess that's why? Can I stop her doing this?

I really don't want them peeing on my new house :(

One tray per cat plus one is the general rule. They should be in different places round the house so that one cat can't "guard" the facilities. Try a mixture of covered and open trays, some cats like a bit of privacy. Also, try several different types of litter (Sainsbury's own brand at £1.20 a bag is the best IMO!) and clean them out every few days.

Also, get some Feliway plug in diffuser which will emit calming wafts of pheremone (sp) so they furballs feel at home.

Tinfoil or anything orange scented on the surfaces
