Sudden aggression

Hello all,

I have two house cats, brothers, and they are very soft and lovely. They will be 4 in August. they have always been house cats as we live on an incredibly busy road. I would love to move!

Anyway, they are pretty close. They follow each other around, and they curl up close to each other on our bed for hours each day. They also travel together in a dog carrier as they become very distressed when separated.

However, yesterday they started fighting violently. One had claws stuck in his face, the other had hidden and done a poo behind the sofa and refused to come out. They are currently in separate rooms upstairs, crouched and aggressive, so it has gone on for more that 24hrs. The smaller cat is growling and spitting at the bigger one, who keeps creeping out to stare at the small one, holding his belly low to the floor and twitching his tail.

I have managed to get a vets appointment for Friday as they are due a check up anyway, but if anyone has any advice or suggestions as to what might have set this off, I would really appreciate it. They were both neutered as kittens.
